I want to mate my Akita bitch. She has been in season for 10 days over the last 2 days her loss has been very thin. Is she now ready.

How old is she, and how many heats has she had?

have you been in touch with a suitable stud dog owner?
have they not suggested when the best times to mate the bitch is?
& normall fertile time for your breed?

Providing you have done all the other things you should have done before mating, take you bitch to the vet for a pre-mate test today and if she is not ready today the vet will suggest when to have the next test. You go on having tests until the vet says the time is right, then it's on the phone to the sires owner and into the car. There is no way one can tell over the internet, bitches are individuals and will be ready anytime from day 7 to day 21 and I bet there are those who will have had a bitch conceive outside those days. Hi guest

Presuming you have done all the necessary things hip and eye tests, studied the breed, found a suitable stud and have a good knowledge of the breed, I ask myself why do you not know when to mate her? Surely if you have the basic ideas on breeding you would know this as it is probaly one of the first things that you learn about your bitch. If you do not know simple things like this then I would recondsider breeding, wait till you have more knowledge of the breed, is your bitch a good example of the breed standerd? is the stud dog you have chose? If you have not picked a stud yet then I think you have left it too late as research for your stud should have been done well in advance. I am sure the people on this board would agree. :)

Hi Guest,
As an ex breeder of Akitas i suggest that you think seriously about breeding your bitch. Is it to keep a puppy for yourself or is it to gain a bit of money (sorry but must be said).
The breed does not always make the ideal pet although your bitch might have a good temperament she could be bred from dogs that are highly strung & dominant or have aggressive tendancies please research your bitch's history before breeding her & if you do decide to breed make sure she is eye tested & hip scored & pay for the best quality stud dog you can afford and his temperament must be an utmost if you are to sell the puppies as family pets then think of his pedigree & conformation & ask yourself if he would compliment your bitch in both pedigree & looks.
If you have already researched all this and still want to breed her this season then the best time to mate her is between the 11th & 14th day of her season try and get two matings if you can 1 on say her 11th day then again on her 13th day is the norm for akitas. A good sign of telling when she is ready is that if she is very swollen on her privates & when you pat her rump she stands still and moves her tail to the side is generally a good indication that she is ready & the blood will turn a watery pink colour.
But please whatever you do make the right decision as these dogs are bred for guarding & hunting & do not always make loving pets when they reach maturity. You wouldn't want someone ringing you up & telling you the puppy they bought from you a couple of years ago has savaged their child or themselves would you?

Even worse if 2 or 3 people do and insist that you have the dog back, which you are obliged to do if you wish to be considered resposible along with the pups that went to homes that have broken up and those who love the puppy but don't want the dog once it reaches the teenage years. Ja:)kie

See this is the problem with Akitas so many people buy them as pets from breeders and then decide to breed from them later on in life & what these people don't understand is that an Akita can be a lethal weapon in the wrong hands & they need very firm training especially the males and even this dosen't work sometimes when they reach maturity at 3-4 years old.So breeding a litter of puppies comes with a very big responsibility, you are obliged as the breeder to take back any of your dogs that need re-homing or training & to give as much information to the puppy buyer as you can & you must also ask yourself if you could take an Akita to the vets to be PTS if it has gotten too much out of control to retrain? Its a hard thing to do i can tell you that from experience.
My Akita puppies were never sold to people with young children & when people asked me why i wouldn't, it is because in my opinion they should not be kept as family pets, they are far too intelligent for their own good & if they are allowed to become top dog in your household then they can become very aggressive towards their owner & other people.
An akita is a beautiful animal & yes there will be a few out there that have never once shown aggression towards you or anyone, but you must always be on your guard with them & never be too complacent.
