My boy has sired two litters 5 matings in total, last one 10 weeks ago and now is refusing his third bitch (that is third he has refused to mate).  I have another boy who is top dog could this be the problem and if so why now.  He is interested but just wont do the biz.  Any suggestions please.

Does he have an enlarged prostate which is painful?
- By minimom [gb] Date 05.12.08 19:35 UTC
no I dont think so , have had a gentle route around and can feel nothing abnormal,
he is not yet two. But will have to get a vet examination done if all else fails.

Maybe the bitch is not quite ready, my dog wont mate until bitch is really ready for mating.

Does he live with a bitch at all?
- By minimom [gb] Date 06.12.08 17:49 UTC
Yes he does live with bitches, but not the first two he failed to mate

I wonder if he injured himself after mating his last bitch, either the penile bone, or his back?  The former would put him off attempting to mate a bitch.

> I wonder if he injured himself after mating his last bitch

That was my first thought when I read this. It is so easy for a dog to get hurt that we can sometimes be a bit complacent when mating our animals.

Of course, it could be that the timing is wrong.

Is he 'handled' when mating or left to do it on his own?

He will mount the bitch and thrust a few times but never enough to penetrate (sorry if thats a bit graffic)  he doesnot seem to be in any sort of pain,  and I am not aware of any thing upsetting him last time he mated.  The bitch was held before, and this time, now I am sort of giving him a free reign, but being ready to hold bitch as and when necessary.  I am at a complete loss.

If I put them outside he is on her every two mins, if I bring them in he is not interested when we are around, and of course I have to be around, just in case he gets there,

It sounds like she's either not ready or he doesn't feel he has to rush.  You could try seperating them for 2-3 hrs with just a door between them.  Then tease him with her before trying again - if she isn't quite ready then he will not necessarily feel the urge to do the biz preferring to play around.  The males can get over tired by allowing them to play too much and then not quite have the drive to penetrate.  If he thinks he may just miss the chance of mating her he may just try that little bit harder.  Also is the bitch slightly taller than the previous ones he did mate as he may be having a problem reaching her - he may need to be guided in.

Hi thanks for the reply, have done the separating bit with them only able to see one another but not get near, have put him away for a couple of hours and overnight, The bitch is a bit smaller than him access is not the problem. Have also put him away 15 mins 2 mins out 15 mins in etc for an hour yesterday and everytime he comes out he mounts her but nothing more.

if she isn't quite ready then he will not necessarily feel the urge to do the biz preferring to play around.

I am hoping this is the case, but he was exactly the same with a previous bitch until she went off. Then obviously he lost interest completely.  also the minute I touch the bitch he gets off, dont know what thats all about, so guiding him in isnt an option also most of the time his lipstick isn't out enough to guide in.  The bitch is getting as fed up as me, he is caged now, I will try him again this afternoon.  Thanks again for your reply

He is still quite young and inexperienced.. with only a few matings under his belt he is still very much a novice.. and touching him could be putting him off..

I have two boys.. one is like your boy, he needs to find his own time and its not until I am absolutely sure HE is ready that I begin guiding him in.. he prefers to wine, dine, and take flowers.. and can take an age to finally mount and get the job done... touching him when was a big no no at the start, I think he felt it was putting him off, or he was doing something wrong..

Another of my boys.. is at the other end of the spectrum.. he is a get your coat, you've pulled.. type of lager lout :-)

getting him used to being touched could be one of your answers.. just occcassionally, no fuss, reach down as if you were checking his 'bits'.. then walk away.. he will begin to think it's no big deal.. then perhaps when you are guiding him.. he wont object to the strange feeling.. and it is strange to them..

As others have said.. maybe the girl just isnt ready.. some dogs need the girl to be spot on.. my other boy would use a date r*pe drug if he could :-D

Also.. after speaking to a few breeders, mating crops up quite often.. and we have found that a dog that is more coddled, the couch potato, cuddles with mum type boys are more inclined to not want to do the business in front of mum.. girls are the same..

Good luck
