Topic Dog Boards / Health / My Cockers infected lip folds.

After serveral weeks of my cocker abosultely reeking and being told it was her breath, we have now found out that she has ulcerations in the lip folds.  They saws and ulcerations go through layers of the skin.  My vet checked her teeth but didn't find anything like sever gingervitis.  But on a close look of her tongue he also found ulcerations on there and on each ulceration there was a tuft of fur.  Something he has never seen  before.  So he has taken two biopsis from the tongue with hairs intact and sent them away to be analysed.  Her bloods have come back completely clear.  I suppose it is just means I will have to wait for the results of the biopsis.   He also said that once this clears perhaps it would be best to remove the lip folds altogether.  This is bad enough but the hairy ulcerated tongue is a bit of a worry to me.  I have mouth wash. fuciderm. antibiotics and metacalm.

Does anyone have any ides.?

Don't know about the hairy tongue, very odd. I have found washing the chin and outer lips with a solution of hibiscrub is holding it at bay. I just make it up in a plasic lidded box and put cotton make-up remover pads in it ,enough to soak up the fluid but not be drippy. There allways handy and I do this after meals it, does look and smell much better.

My friend's cocker had this and once the vets cream and antibiotic had worked was advised to wipe the folds daily with salt water and dry them.  She also uses Johnsons Dog cream (Tea Tree) as a barrier cream and this has worked really well as the cream from the vet always gave the dog a really bad tum :(

Good luck with the Biopsy results - fur on the tongue, very strange

Never come across the tongue problem before - will be interesting to see what the results show up.

A few of my cockers have had lipfold problems with varying degrees of severity. One of the boys had it really bad - very ulcerated & reeked like nothing on earth. Antibiotics would clear it only for it to return just as bad a few days later so a decision was made to put him through the surgery and he has never looked back.
