Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Grooming tips - to remove crinkly/matted clumps!
- By koolcad Date 05.12.08 00:19 UTC
Hi, I've got a rather lovely girly with a very hairy back end!  The hair on her bustles gets quite crinkly and matted, plus due to the crinkles they collect rather a lot of plant life on some walks!  I was wondering what grooming spray people might use.  I have used one that is Aloe Vera based, but the smell is just too much, even for me!
Many, many years ago, I used to have a perm and used a hair serum to make it all glossy and curly rather than crinkly and frizzy!  I suppose I'm looking for something similar for doggies.  Before anyone says - yes, I have used the hair serum on my girl but it doesn't have the same effect!
Thanks for any suggestions.

The STUFF is brilliant.  Helps to detangle and also prevents further tangling ;)

I've also used it on my own hair (permed ringlets prone to frizzing in damp/rainy/humid weather)

without a doubt the stuff i use is for horses to remove debris and mud build up in long tails.... its by a company called carr&day&martin... they do two products which are basically the same thing... personally i use canter coat shine, bt they also do a coat conditioner. the two are basically the same thing. they just call them 2 separate things to make more money out of unsuspecting punters.... i have extremely dry matted hair unless its brushed everyday and i use this on me. it smells fab and is only about 7 quid for a big bottle.... it lasts my HORSE all the showing season which is from march to sept, you don't even have to use it everyday, it leaves a soft silky feel for a couple of weeks whick repels dirt, and allows you to just slide twigs like brambles straight out with no pain whatsoever... its the best thing i've ever used

I totally agree about the Canter Mane and Tail conditioner,Tanya, its amazing stuff and I couldn't manage without it at the salon.

Thanks very much for these replies.  I do rather like the idea of being able to use the product on myself too!  Though days of long, curly locks are long gone!!

Having bearded collies I can come across this problem if I dont groom religiously.:) a lot of beardie people including myself use amazing trix from dezynadog  smells lovely or the more expensive grooming spray from Doreen Paige .
Have tried mane and tail in the past but its too oily even the minimal amount it also leaves the floor slippy where the dogs have layed , plus I think its too heavy for the coat.

A very observant comment! :)   I only use it in the parlour for Spaniel ears and definitely wouldn't recommend it for use on the body.  There is no substitute for good grooming. :)

You spray it into the matt or when grooming normally you lift the coat and spray underneath so it get right to the skin.

The Aloe Vera spray I've used is by Doreen Paige ... none of use can stand the smell of it.  In fact, all my dogs go into the darkest recesses of the house when they see the bottle coming out the grooming bag!  Sorry, Doreen!!
