my girl had one mating 65 days ago.
she was due on Tuesday, day 63 but no pups
she has been panting on and off, is off her food on and off, wheezes in her sleep when laying
There is movemnt from the pups, i have felt just now and can feel them moving, she sleeps most of the time, and in between either goes out for an excorted toilet or walks around the house then finds space to lay again, she has been nesting a little tearing newspaper etc

I am just wondering if I should be worrying yet as it is day 65? I understand that the concieving could take up to 72 hours after a mating but still I would like peoples ideas
she has had a litter before so this will be her 2nd.
she iis a large breed dog, seems happy in herslef at present,
please advise if you can thank you

If you are worried then a trip to the vet is always a good idea, even if it is only to put your mind at rest ;-)

Movement from the pups is a good sign as they wouldn't be moving if there was a major problem. They could be moving into the correct position, just waiting to be born in the next day or so. Some bitches can go a few days over the time limit, so don't panic yet. It's just like babies to make us wait :-)

well the news is that early friday my dog gave birth!
I did speak to the vets on the Thursday and she was quite happy with my dog and said she would start to have her pups within 24 hours!
we now have 4 boys and 1 girl all doing great!

hi thank you everyone, well I have moulded the sofa into my shape so it feels a bit more confortable!

Sadly one of the pups was PTS yesterday as I noticed he had a small hole on the inside top of his mouth, near the gum line, he had been feeding but after listening to his breathing it sounded very noisey and destressed, so off to the vets to check and sadly he had an even bigger hole right at the of his throat so what he was drinking was going straight to his little lungs, very upsetting but relieved the little fella is not suffering anymore.

On the good side, the other pups are thriving, and mummy dog is doing great.
And I really dont think I could do this again!

Sorry that you ahve lost a little one but it was good that you had noticed a problem so he didn't have to suffer.  Enjoy the other babies.

sorry to hear about your little one.  sadly things like this do happen now and again but you did everything possible and the little fella is not suffering anymore.

Thank you everyone for your kind replies, it is hard when things like this happen, but I am focusing now on the littermates and they are growing by the minute!
Mummy dog is also doing great, she is a fantastic mummy, she spends most of her time with her pups but has the freedom to leave the nest if she pleases, while pups are sleeping and content, but as soon as they squeal she is there to find out what they want! she is brilliant.

hi just thinking, could anyone tell me when the best time is to have my girl spayed?
I know it would be after pups have left for their new homes but is there a certain time after post whelp?

My understanding it is best mid way between seasons.  So depending on how often your girl has them I would have work out when the next one is due and go for the mid point.

12-16 weeks from the END of her season is the safest time.

I personally would wait until after her next season before spaying. That way i would know everything was back to normal after having the pups.

16 weeks is a good time after pups have gone to ther new home ,and every thing should have settled down by then ,sorry for the loss of one of the puppies ,i had to do the same with my last litter 1 of the girls just stoped sucking but there was no holes ,she was tiny its hard but you were on the ball in finding it soon

from mum having pups :) thats what my vet advised me !!

I have always had mine spayed when pups are 11 or 12 weeks old. any longer and they are coming close to their next season, wheas at this stage they are two to three months from the next one, depending if they come in as if they hadn't had a litter, or delay it a bit.

In my breed a bitch wil be out of commison with the after whelping moult until the pups are 6 months, so waiting until the next season to spay often means that they loose all the coat aqgain after spaying and you loosem another show season.

So I prefer to get the recovery period for pupsm and spaying over in one go.

in reply to whitelilly - well that would be around 26 weeks from the end of her season & just as she is ready to come into season again.
