Hi

What do you advise I should use to clip my puppies claws they are one week old and quite sharp and I dont want them to damage their mum so she stops feeding them.  Any advise gratefully received.

I use baby nail clippers (or rather my husband does) to take the tips off.  Depending on the thickness of the nails as they grow I then go on to adult size nail clippers.  My husband does them at least once a week to ensure they don't scratch mum.

Hope this helps.

I just use ordinary curved people's nail scissors from about a week old, and ours are a large breed with thick nails.  By the time they leave us at around 8 weeks we move on to proper spring loaded nail clippers.

i bought some from my vets - they look like little scissors but have a half moon shape at the end that fits around the pups claws to trim the ends.  So you could try at your vets and sorry but i don't actually know what they are called, although they were recommended to me and are very good.

Please be careful and only clip the very end of the pups nails as it is so easy to accidentally cut their quick.

Good Luck with your puppies x

I use clippers for cats on my pups. It's the perfect size for tiny claws. Then when the pups are eight weeks and move to their new homes, ordinary dog clippers can be used.

i do mine (fronts)every other day from about 5 days onwars. I do backs about once a week. I do it while they are sleeping with a tiny tiny pair of scissors until 2 weeks then nailclippers.

Yes, I used ordinary people nail clippers for my puppies when they were very young. Scariest thing I've ever done, cutting nails on 5 day old Cavalier puppies - they were so tiny!!!

I've always used regular nail clippers to clip the pups nails with. Nipping the tips off once or twice a week as needed on the fronts, once a week at the back. Mine are a toy breed (you'd never guess lol*rolls eyes*) so their little claws are easy to do.

Hi

What does their "Quick" Mean when cutting their nails??
- By hillbilly [gb] Date 29.11.08 16:32 UTC
It's the part that has red in it - it will bleed if you cut it.  If your puppy has dark nails it can be difficult to see.

They wont bleed to death will they??  I havent cut them yet!!!

If you just stick to the tips you will be fine- I think toe nail clippers are best, waste of money buying them from vets when clippers do same job.

Its easier to cut them too long than too short- if dont cut them enough at least you can do it again.

If you just take the tip off they will be fine. As the other poster said you can take them shorter if necessary.  Do you not do your adult dogs nails yourself?  If you don't feel confident enough to do your bitches yourself you could use a file as that way if you do take them to short you don't get a proper bleed.

No they won't bleed to death, but it might hurt and they will be less keen on having their nails cut next time! As others have said, just take the very tips off for now, better safe than sorry. Get some Quickstop or just use flour if you haven't got any handy, just in case, if you do nip a quick just shove some on the bleeding bit as sometimes they bleed a ridiculous amount for such a tiny part of the body!

Yes, it does hurt! I caught one of my bitches when quite young - at 10 yrs plus- she still has apoplexy at the sight of the nail clippers! Have to use lots of bribery! If you do make a claw bleed, draw the claw down a tablet of toilet soap, stops it bleeding and acts as an anti-septic.
