Can anyone help us to find a breader of the chocolate coloured cocker spaniels. We have not had a dog since we sadly had to have our last dog put to sleep 9 years ago, which nearly broke my heart, but we have now decided that now is the time and we would like to have another dog to share our home, and after visiting numerous web sites and reading many dog books, we have finally decided on a cocker spaniel. Trying to find one is proving to be rather difficult, we would like to talk to a breader of cocker spaniels who can give us some information on a few queries that we have before actiual commiting to a puppy. We have read quite a lot about some solid colours being prone to rage and as we have three children (15,13, & 11) we would like to hear what the breaders have found or if this is rare.

We are in the process of having the garden made secure for a puppy and would be more than happy to have our home vetted if we find the right breader and puppy.

Hope someone can help us.

Many thanks.

Hello

If you need more information on Rage Syndrome in Cockers, then have a look here Hopefully this site will answer all the questions you may have. Rage is thankfully quite rare but you do see poor temperaments occasionally in all the colours, mainly due to poor breeding practices & lack of socialisation, especially in puppies bought from multi-breed commercial kennels. If you buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, then you should not have any problems with temperament, although of course, temperament is also to some extent dependant on continuing socialisation & training by the new owner.

I'm afraid you will find it very difficult to locate a solid chocolate Cocker pup if you are looking for the type of Cocker you see in books & on most websites ie the show-type as this is quite a rare colour nowadays. I understand the colour is more common in Working Cocker lines, but Working Cockers do look somewhat different to how you probably imagine a Cocker to look like & need plenty of mental stimulation, being very busy, active little dogs. You would probably have more luck locating a reputable breeder if you were able to be more flexible on the colours you would consider

If it is this colour that really appeals, had you considered a Field Spaniel which comes in Liver, which is the same colour as chocolate (different breeds call the same colour by different names).
