Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / what to feed Akita Huskey x
- By alxxx [gb] Date 27.11.08 10:41 UTC
hi everyone
I have an 2yo Akita Huskey x who has a delicate stomach, every food that I have tried gives him the squits badly, I have tried all the major tinned foods, just about every type of dried food all with the same result, The diet that I have him on now is a home cooked one, which is the only food that I have found that agrees with him, I feed him a mixture of ox heart/kidney, pigs heart/liver, beef/lamb mince, chicken, white fish, tuna with brown rice and veg.
this all agrees with his stomach but I am concerned that he may not be getting all the nutrients that he needs, also the amount of food as well
I feed him 150 grams mince 250 grams rice for breakfast, 360 grams meat 360 grams rice 200grams veg for dinner,
what do you think I should be feeding him? his weight is about 36-37 kg, well it was last time he was weighed.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Weight is easy.  If he has a noticable tuck up by his tummy and when you run your hands lightly down his sides you can just feel his ribs, he's a good weight.

Based on your homecooked diet - I would be concerned that he's getting enough calcium.  Meat without bone is high in phosphorous and low in calcium.  So I would supplement with a pure source of calcium, meaning calcium without anything added like phosphorous of vitamins.   Otherwise, his diet sounds fine to me.

thanks for the reply, would the calcium be from the vet or do Pets at Home stock it?

As he's a cross it's hard to say exactly what will suit him but there is a recent post from someone on feeding a husky that may be of some interest - at least if he takes after the husky side when it comes to food and digestion. Worth a read anyway.

I believe Pets at Home only stock calcium with added phosphorous. They used to stock bone meal - but it was horrible stuff and potentially dangerous.  I bought it once and the container (Walfcol I believe) was full of dry, sterilized (cooked) small shards of pointy bone.   If you can find human grade powdered bone meal at a health store; that would be fine.

Holland and Barrett stock a chewable calcium tablet - all it is is calcium carbonate.   Just make sure to look for one with nothing else added to it, wherever you buy it.

If you like eggs, you can also save the shells, grind them to a powder  - a teaspoon equals 1,800 milligrams of calcium.

From my notes:
Calcium/Phosphorous Ratio needs to be 1:1 (minimum) to 2:1, which equates to about:
800 - 1000 mg calcium per .5 kilograms

I'd recommend you get a good book on nutrition, I like Pitcairn's Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.   Probably anything by him would be fine.  He gives recipes and although he recommends raw, he also says you can cook the meat.  (I don't feed raw.)

you can feed raw (and i emphasise raw) bone to a dog in order to provide calcium. there are loads of threads if you search the forum :)
