Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / pustule of pus on vulva
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 26.11.08 13:48 UTC
Hi all
I was just checking my girls 'bits' as she was laying having her tummy tickled when i noticed she some fur stuck to her vulva and it looked a bit mucousy (mated 3 weeks ago) when i very gently pulled the fur away loads of blood pus came out like a burst spot. I cleaned it away with a tissue and can see a small hole just slightly smaller than a piece of sweetcorn but it looks pusy inside.

Have booked appt at vets for half 2 today but just wondered if anyone else had experience of this. She is a short legged breed and is always running through heather and through the woods when out on walks so wondering if she's caught herself of if its something more horrid like a cancer??? she does seem a bit bobbly on her vulva on the other side - small pimple like rash.

I know if she has taken with the mating this is the time that is most vulnerable for embyos implanting and developing etc - dont want the vet to be pulling her around or stressing her too much.

really worried

My boxers used to get pussie spots on their chins  and vulvas..I took it as a good sign that the bitch was being flooded with normal hormones.

The only time I've heard about this is when CHV was present and sadly the litter was lost at 7 weeks, I really hope this isn't the case you are doing the safest thing getting her checked out by your vet.

Vet wasn't too concerned and gave antibiotic injection plus 14 days worth of anti b's for me to give her. Says it could just be an injury through running over twigs and heather etc but she did also say she was a little spotty on the otherside of her vulva (which i had noticed too). Didn't give much explaination except maybe glands being more active???

Got to bathe the area with salt water couple of times a day and just road walking to reduce further dirt getting in. My girlie did get a bit aggitated when the vet cleaned the area so all paws crossed that we get healthy pups, if any at all!

With CHV what other signs are there that i might notice?
- By tooolz Date 26.11.08 17:13 UTC
Potentially nothing until the puppies are born, it is they who suffer most from the CHV.

As I said before I think (and hope ) it's a flush of hormones. Glad your vet is happy with her.

Don't be too worried.  I had a mated bitch that was attacked badly enough to need surgery.  At this point I wasn't sure if she had taken, but, anyway, accepted that reabsorption was going to be the outcome.  I had already accepted that there wasn't going to be a litter, and was more worried about my girl being okay.  Even the vet told me that there would not be any pups after the GA.  She had two pups!

thank you for that positive post. Its such a worry and now convinced myself esp after lots of searching that she has CHV! speaking to the vet again tomorrow who saw her today. If it is CHV then antibiotics wont help really except stop infection of the little hole she has.

what about vaccination of CHV in pregnancy?
- By Ktee [au] Date 26.11.08 23:37 UTC
My girl had a similar thing a couple of weeks ago, however you probably would have noticed if seeds or something came out with the pus.
Her problem was grass seeds, those things that look like spears. She had a lumpy pus filled bump right on the side of her wee wee,i squeezed slightly and 3 grass seeds popped out!It was horrendous and goodness knows how those things got in there,i dread to think :(

I thought that you could vaccinate during pregnancy, but I'm sure that someone will know for sure, hopefully will get someone online soon that give a definte answer.

Didn't notice anything come out except loads of pus/blood fluid, have cleaned her this morning and when you put gentle pressure on it a small amount of pus comes out. It is just like a big spot.  She is well in herself eating drinking etc.

The antibiotics she has is only half a tab per day which doesn't seem enough to me, previously before mating she was on them but it was one per day (had cystitis with an earlier mating in the year so this was a preventative measure). she's been given nisamox 250mg 7 tabs so thats 14 days worth of anti b's.

waiting on a call from the vet at some point today.

CHV, Canine Herpes Virus, can be vaccinated against. Either before the mating, or after. I think in your case it's a bit late, though. I give my girls the vaccination ten days before estimated mating. Then you give a second vaccination about two weeks before the pups are born.
The vaccination contains live antibodies, to help the system fight the virus that might come to life when the body is under stress, ie pregnancy. The virus can make the bitch resorb the pups, or can be caught by the pups at birth.
If you have more than one bitch that you breed from, and suspect CHV, be sure to vaccinate them all, I've learned the hard way :-(

Hi thanks for that info. The vet rang me bak eventually and said she only seen CHV in puppies that were poorly and hadn't ever seen anything on bitches vulva before but was going to check her texts books and call me - that was suppose to be yesterday and i've heard nothing! Regarding the antibiotics she said it was the right dose for her weight but i have never given antibiotics only once a day - the dose is normally split over 2 or 3 times a day, thoughts on this??

Just bathed the area again on my girl and she has small skin coloured pin head like spots, when they are gently pressured pus comes out as if it were acne. She doesn't seem in any discomfort and isn't licking the area at all. The raised nobbly skin is at the top/point of her vulva.

Going to get a second opion on monday but in the meantime just in case it is CHV could i use zovirax on the area???? it is a herpes cream but normally use on cold sores.
- By ShaynLola Date 29.11.08 17:56 UTC
Zovirax is not intended for use on the human genital area so I would not risk it on a dog either.  Also, if the cause is not herpes related, aciclovir (the active ingredient in zovirax) should NOT be used at all as it can greatly exacerbate other skin complaints.
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 29.11.08 23:21 UTC
yeah i know its only used for cold sores but just wanted to try and help as not got far with the vet. Haven't used it as it was just an idea.

feel annoyed with the vet really - seem to get a lot further with advice on here!

You inject for herpes 7/10 days after first breeding and 7/10 days before pups are due
My vet said even if first one missed it was worth still having the second one
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 01.12.08 12:42 UTC
Went for 2nd opinion to my normal vets today to question the antibiotics (other vet had said give once a day but i knew this wasn't right despite questioning it!) and her spots.
Antibiotics to be given twice a day and has also given fusiderm cream to apply twice a day. He said he didnt think its CHV but more perhaps just a post season/mating infection, she also has a bit of discharge that looked pusy. If its not cleared by the end of the week now she's on correct dose then he will take a swab.

He also had a quick feel of her tummy but couldn't palpate anything but she is only 25/26 post mating so hopefully its just a bit too early.

Not feeling very hopeful of a pregnancy now but will keep paws crossed. Have just phoned other vet and put in a complaint about the vet i saw last week regarding antibiotic dosage and that she never got back to me after saying she would.

Feel upset,  if the correct things had been done then maybe her vulva would be improving and a possible pregnancy would not be put at risk.

How is your little lady doing?
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 04.12.08 19:04 UTC
She's fine thank you. Very full of life and not bothered by her 'bits'. We continue with antibiotics and the cream.

The small spots are beginning to dry up but still have a little bit of yuk in them, but it is looking better.

Got her scan on monday evening so really hoping for some good news though at present she is showing no signs of pregnancy and you know when you have that gut feeling that shes missed. I have dreamt twice that her scan was negative :-(
- By Blossom [gb] Date 04.12.08 21:33 UTC
Glad it's getting better.

I hav everything crossed for her scan :)
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 08.12.08 20:38 UTC
Just to let you all know that her scan showed No babies :-(

Feeling sad as was looking forward to all the hard work that puppies cause!
- By Blossom [gb] Date 08.12.08 22:26 UTC
Oh no I am so sorry :(
