Topic Dog Boards / Health / Anal glands

Hi, not a particularly nice question but how do I empty Polo's anal glands? They seem to need doing fairly often - this week they've filled up again after a bout of soft poos (bin raiding - sigh). They were last done by the vet about 3/4 months ago.  I've heard they shouldn't need expressing so frequently -  he's on a good quality food and very healthy - are some dogs more prone than others? Thanks.

Beano used to have to have his emptied every 2 months.
I was shown by the Vet nurse how to do them, and now do them myself whenever I bath him.
Noone can explain on text, as it is easy to get them wrong. And can damage the dog.
Also Some dogs can be expressed Externally like Beano, others need to be internaslly like Ebba's
So go to vets and get them to show you how to do them :) :) :)

Some dogs do seem more prone than others, and in my breed it may have something to with the tailset.  One of our bitches has a tail on the lowside, and she does sometimes need her anal glands doing.  The vet says that the glands are quite deepset and everything is a lttle bit lower than it should be - consequently, I cannot express them and neither can she on her own.  Having said that, they only need doing about once every six months at worst, and they haven't currently been done for over a year.
None of the other dogs ever need theirs doing, and they are all fed the same.
