Any of you medics or work in that area??

Not sure if i have a broken nose or not and don't think that it would consitute a trip to A&E either.
The dog has been at it again.

Headbutted me this time right in the nose. Nearly fainted and had a nose bleed. Still very sore to touch after 3 hours, slightly swollen and no bruising as yet.

Ouch!!!!

This happened to a friend of ours who had come over for dinner and a few drinks, he ended up having a few too many decided he was going to play ball with Bree (Taz) our little parson terror. Who proceeded to jump up clash heads with him. Friend laughed it off (drunk, rolleyes ). He got up in the morning with one tooth missing, black eye and broken jaw. Well you know what terriers are like:) Funny he never did play ball with him again.

Sue,I hope you are OK though, if you are worried It can't hurt to get it checked out, can it ? :)

ouch!! my dog headbutted me yesterday when i bent down to pick up a blooming betterware catalogue from floor. like you i thought i would faint, no blood, but sore for a while afterwards and i felt a bit sick. later on last night it was fine and been ok today. maybe if still sore tomorrow head to A&E, take some painkillers tonight!

My son got hit in the nose the other week at kick boxing and had a nose blee, and hurt like mad for a while but was ok.
If it doesnt look out of shape I wouldn't worry,.
If it does I would go see doc tomorrow :) Purely for cosmetic reasons :) :)
I know being hit in the nose is very painful :o

Get some ice on it (bag of peas covered in a tea towel) to get the selling down a bit. Do that regularly and the bruising will go quicker :) :)

Sorry to say that they won't do anything in A&E if it isn't actively bleeding. They usually refer you to ENT to reset it(if it needs it!) at a later date. The only thing to be concerned about is concussion? If you were knocked out at all? If you feel sick or develop a severe headache then you need to go to A&E. You should have someone stay with you tonight, just in case of problems? Hope that helps!? (Used to be Senior Nurse in A&E) Take care, Dawn The ice is a good idea, but keep it in a towel, you don't want ice burns!

Then he went back to playing tug with her!!! LMAO
The head under the chin is always a good one.
Broken fingers is another one I have heard recently!!!!
Now, paying evils advocate here, do you think the documented injuries caused by dogs are alot by accident through play etc  more than viscious in a and E!!!!!! LOL

I think I mentioned a couple of years ago, I broke my thumb while mating Tia... after a couple of days.. I went to A&E.. The Doctor asked how I damaged it.. and I replied.. Sex lol... he obviously had  a lot of these injuries.. his next question was... Horse or Dog lol.. apparently most of the foot injuries documented are mating horses, and hand injuries from mating dogs.. makes you think :-)

Edited to add.. sorry Sue hope you nose isn't broken.. I know from experience the pain and the panda eyes for a couple of weeks, but thankfully not broken..

Hahaha...you should see some of the things I'VE seen in A&E...some of them I can't even mention on a forum such as this!!!;-) You'd be amazed how many implements I've seen in certain body orifices!!! And I don't just mean the very personal 'how very dare you' places!!! :-)

My son broke his nose (someone else's football boot in his face) and there was claret everywhere.  They didn't do anything in A&E but told us to wait a week for the swelling to go down and come back for assessment.  He didn't get black eyes and his breathing wasn't affected  but his nose was very bent so he had it straightened under GA.  He still didn't get the black eyes.  I was surprised.  Anyway, 2 years on and it's not caused any probs.

this happen to me rush hated having his toes clip,
so we gave him some acp to let him be in twilight mode went down to pick up a paw wack up went his head hitting my nose very bad,got over that so i left it another hour give another acp same thing happen again,

andrew rush me to a/e try telling them  it was my dog that head but me twice and it wasnt my husband,

it a joke in this family how i got my broken nose,

the other pagan did it i went down to pick some thing up she came up wack again.

A bit late to advise an ice pack now, but I do hope you are feeling a bit more comfortable, and you dont have the further indignity of black eyes...which is pretty common after a bash on the nose!

You've reminded me a of a few years ago when a friend at work broke her nose on a shop awning.  We clubbed together and bought her some flowers in various shades of yellow to cheer her up.  Unfortunately, we hadn't really thought our choice of blooms through, and it was really quite striking whilst handing the bouquet over a few days after the accident that it exactly matched the bruising round her eyes... :-o

Ouch, unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done even if it is broken. Hopefully it will be OK

I was a zoo keeper in my younger days and I got clawed by a Jaguar try telling them that at A&E they thought I had done it as a dare!!

I have a scare on my foot where a Zebra bite me.. I was standing on the forbidden wall to see better...at the hospital, (Military one) ,they told me off and said rules were for a reason... at 9 I listened...soon changed my mind and decided breaking rules was more fun !!!!

Will be good stories for the grand kids wont they whistler ????

You should go to A&E, nope they don't do anything but they should refer you on to ENT Open Access for the  next day.  You have to have it done within a 3 week timescale or else you have to wait and have a much larger operation.

Get it sorted straight away so that you can have a simple manipulation under GA than going for a bigger procedure in a number of months time.

That should of course say SCAR !!!!!

You might be better off going to a minor injuries unit rather than a&e. There wont be such a wait and they can still refer to ent.

If you haven't already, I'd get your nose checked out - it's better to know than to be wondering! Dogs eh?! My friends Samoyed has split my lip twice now, bending down to give her a kiss she always goes for my mouth but jumps up at the same time, I looked like I had a proper trout pout last time!! Hope you are feeling better soon. :-)

My word, not been on here for a day and all these responses.

Last night i had to go to obedience training, thought i was going to pass out on the way there whilst driving and also in class. My head was spinning and i felt so sick.

I went to the dr's this morning who said in view that its not out of shape then i need to leave it alone. It may be bruised or again it may be broken. It still darn well hurts. Advised to use ice packs on nose and also take ibuprofen.

I'm still nursing a finger injury in which dog yanked lead and broke 2nd finger of the year, had operation on it and not able to bend on the of the joints, so having intensive rehab on it over the next few weeks and then they will assess if i need another op or not. Have nasty scar's on finger now..1 scar was an error on the surgeon in view that he made a cut in the wrong place when operating!!!
My dog does have a lot to answer to right now..
He looks at you as if butter wouldn't melt, can't be annoyed at him for long as i just ended up smiling due to his funny nature.

Not heard of that before.  I don't think our hospital has one.

I've not heard of it either.  I work in ENT and advice is A&E so get quick referral as you need to have the reset within 3 weeks of the injury.

Hi I work in a minor injuries unit and it is for what it says minor injuries. Our hospital hasnt got an A&E. The nearest one is about 20 miles away. It would just be a much quicker wait as in A&E you can be waiting for hours. Our patients rarely wait for longer than 30 mins.

I think some cottage hospitals have a minor injury section so does our local doctors, usually use that rather than A&E but A&E when we are at home its closer. I knew OH needed stitches and a tetnus so we went there.

Round here they do too.  Perhaps it is more rural places but if you whack Minor Injuries Unit and your home town into Google something should come up if there is one.

A lot of the minor injuries units are now being called 'walk in centres' - they will treat anything 'minor' up to breaks and cuts that may need suturing but anything more serious they will point in the direction of A&E.  Most are nurse practitioner-led but the odd one has a doctor present at certain times.
