My parents didn't register me until the last day, 6 weeks after I was born.  I was called Fritz until then.

I just presumed it would be Phillipa!
But now Im thinking.... Philomena!!!  (I had an old aunt called Philomena, she was as mad as a bag of frogs..but wonderfull! verrry excentric. and her sister was Jobina {pronounced Joe-Bye-Nah} dont think Ive spelt that right?? But both were No mess Broad scottish battleaxes!! Jobina insisted we call her 'Aunty Beanie' but as Billy Connolly was huge when we were kids we thought she ought to have been Aunty Jobby!! :-D Aunty Philomena was the stricter of the two, so we would call them Aunty Beanie and Aunty Meanie!!)

Eeeeeeeeeeeee.. Im sitting here wiping tears of laughter away, sorry its probably not in least funny to anyone else..but ah..thinking of 'The Big Yin' the word 'Jobby' still transforms me into Olivia aged 5 and 3 quarters!! :-D *snigger*

youre right in thinking its Philippa for my first name HG....... but i get called Philly and its the Philly bit added to my surname that I think it ridiculous and im embarrased by.

but i wont divulge untill theres something in if for me lmao ;)

Funnily enough My late friend knowing how much I hated my name once told someone who was badgering me about it that I was called Philomena Berkendoodle to shut them up cos i was getting annoyed...funnily enough he still is none the wiser to this day and is utterly convinced that is my name.......what an idiot lol......

ill start you off though my surname starts with an F

> her sister was Jobina {pronounced Joe-Bye-Nah}

Is that just a Scottish thing?  There are loads of people in the older generation (quite a bit older than me ;) ) who have names that are their fathers names with -ina on the end which is either pronounced eye-na or ee-na depending on the family.  There are loads of georgina, alexina, bertina, jamesina etc etc  Now these would have been the tallulahs and savannah's of their day.

>Is that just a Scottish thing?

Nope...it's common among the older generation where I come from too.  I recall Thomasina, Hughmina, Johnina etc from the village I grew up in.  Although, thinking about it, that particular part of NI is very closely affiliated to Scotland (particularly the west coast, linked via the fishing industry) and our dialects aren't dissimilar :-)

>Ktee, that was rather tactless

If you read the thread through, she's not the only one to be honest.

There are plenty of traditional names that are out of fashion and lots of new ones that are unusual but at the end of the day what does it matter so long as the name hasn't got negative connotations?

One of my jobs means I work with mostly ethnic groups and I have to ask how to pronounce many names. I guess as time goes on more and more of these names will become more common and some of the unusual spellings we see are variants of names from other cultures anyway.
