YAY!!! WTG Womble and Mom!

Sorry didn't read it all!

get the pups attached to the big teats down by the back legs, the last two in the row of teats. They're usually the most flowing full ones and will be more accessible for the pups. Try gently squeezing for a bit of milk to come out and gently place pups mouth near them! It is imperative that the pups feed quite quickly and once they have they have the effect of making the uterus contract more and enable the placentas to be delivered! Are you sure she hasn't eaten them? Usually, if everything is ok, it is unusual for them to go more than 2-3 hours to deliver any more pups. But you must be sure she isn't still contracting after the placentas have been delivered. All the best, I'm sure there is stuff I've forgotten that others will pick up on!
- By trekkiemo [gb] Date 25.11.08 16:49 UTC
Don`t panic ,she is barking cos you are doing her job .Let mum do it.Get the pups to suckle and it will help.
- By Sam-Jo [gb] Date 25.11.08 16:50 UTC
We had 9 pups and only 3 came out with their placentas attached.  She passed the placentas in the days that followed, I kept finding them in the garden!  One was passed about 10 weeks later :-O but that was very unusual.  Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
- By trekkiemo [gb] Date 25.11.08 16:50 UTC
Congrats to you and your girl
- By hillbilly [gb] Date 25.11.08 16:51 UTC
Are you sure mum didn't eat the placentas - it can all happen so quickly that it is difficult to note what she is doing whilst you are helping a puppy?  If you are sure that she didn't eat them they should be delivered fairly soon. If no more puppies are born (I know you thought there were possibly 3 in total) then get your vet to give her an oxytocin injection which will help dispell any left over bits inside before everything closes up.  I'm so pleased that your bitch has finally had the puppies.  You must be so relieved.
- By goldengirl Date 25.11.08 17:02 UTC
Congratulations glad things are happening and puppies have arrived.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 17:09 UTC
Another girl, it was born at the same time as a placenta but the mum managed to break the cord herself this time. think there might be another one but not sure. can only get two of them to suckle, the first girl doesnt seem to want to yet.
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.08 17:13 UTC
Oww lovely, make sure the first girl stays warm enough, tried squeezing the teat with her mouth near by to give her a little 'taste' of the milk, everything crossed!
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 17:26 UTC
Im still trying to get her to feed but she just wont do it. She did latch on for a couple of second but spat it out, i checked and there is definatly milk there. the pups are all nice and warm. They are all black and tan so im sure i know who the father is now :) will let you know how things are going. Thanks again you have all been a huge help at putting my mind at ease. :) :) Kim.
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.08 17:27 UTC
Do you know how to check for a cleft palate?
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 25.11.08 17:38 UTC
Congratulations!!! Thank goodness she is doing ok. :)

- By donna08 [gb] Date 25.11.08 17:40 UTC
congratulations hope they ok. when my girl had her pups she had 4 and on the last puppy the afterbirth didnt come away she was restless so i phoned the vet and they said it could be another puppy or the afterbirth but not to worry as it will come away. and it did about 9-10 hrs after she had last pup. hope this helps
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 18:10 UTC
I have checked in her mouth and there doesnt seem to be anything abnormal, tongue and roof of mouth fine, she is lively enough but just wont drink. The boy who was first born and who bled alot is bigger than the other two and has been drinking the most. I thought he would die after bleeding so much but he seems to be doing the best so far. Truffles(mum) has had a bowl of chicken soup and is now asleep. have changed all the bedding so its nice and dry for them. she still looks and feels really fat though. Does it take long for the stomach to go back to normal or is it likely she still has some puppies? She doesnt look much different from before she gave birth in size.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 18:38 UTC
Another girl :) She was born feet first and the bag burst before she came out. Her breathing was a a bit choked but she is happily feeding, the one that wasnt drinking has had a little drink now. A lot of dark green stuff has come out with the last puppy but she is still having the occasional contraction.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 18:54 UTC
uh...Puppy number five, another boy he was also born out of his sack and back feet first. I should get my money back for the scan, the vet said "absolutly no more than three" lol!  they are all so beautiful 2 boys 3 girls, they all have a slightly different patch of white under thier chins and they are not black and tan as i originally thought but some are a very dark brown and some are light brown and they all have a dark stripe down thier backs and lighter coloured bottoms :)
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.08 18:55 UTC
Good, sorry went orf to have dinner!

As long as you managed to clear everything out of her lungs etc...it's difficult to tell you how to do it without risking hurting the pup...but maybe just hold her upside doiwn to make sure everything is clear in her airways. If she is ok and feeding and not snuffly or rattley at all she'll be fine!

The dark green isn't unusual, don't worry about that!

WOW, you are going to have your hands full now! Well done, take a deep breath and have a LITTLE glass of Bombay saphhire!! ;-)

She may still contact for a few hours, the uterus has to close itself down, it's been very stretched for the last 9 weeks! Especially as the pups feed, it stimulates the uterus to contract. WELL DONE you!
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.08 18:56 UTC
Ohh Bless!!

Well done, you did really, really well! (so did Mama!)

So she's giving birth to SAUSAGE rolls then?? ;-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.11.08 19:00 UTC

>Im still trying to get her to feed but she just wont do it.

Don't worry too much about that yet. My bitches have never stayed still enough for puppies to suckle until the whole litter's born, and she stops leaping to her feet and turning round to deal with the latest newborn. So just keep them warm until everything's calmer.
- By newfiedreams Date 25.11.08 19:01 UTC
That's true JG, didn't think of that...I was too worried being a potential CD Auntie!!! :-)
- By Teri Date 25.11.08 19:08 UTC
Congratulations :)  All sounds to be going well, despite the worry of every little blip.  Will check back later for the final headcount - if you have enough energy left by then.

Keep them warm and dry for now until you're sure mum's finished :)
- By donna08 [gb] Date 25.11.08 19:48 UTC
glad everything has turned out ok good luck
- By Carrington Date 25.11.08 20:17 UTC
Congratualtions!

and well done to the Dam, a nice size litter, those scans eh! They are notorious for getting the numbers wrong. :-D

Good luck! :-)
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:27 UTC
Puppy number six another girl :) had a big struggle getting her to breath, i thought she was dead but after about a minute of rubbing and tries to clear her chest by swinging it down( the vet showed me how to do that safely) she finally started squeeking. Cant believe the vet could under estimate to that degree! all puppies seem to be getting on alright and all have had a good few feeds. Mum seems to be very warm and is still panting alot. She is drinking a little and has had 2 bowls of chicken soup. Also she is very green all over her back end, she is a white dog so it looks very strange. Will update with any more news :)
- By hillbilly [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:34 UTC
Six puppies?  So much for the scan - I thought this was a small breed and you were unlikely to have more than three.  You have done so well and you should be very proud of yourself for keeping calm and getting on with the job.  Don't worry about the green that is normal once the first pup has been born.  It can be washed off mum over the next couple of days once she's recovered.  It will wash off the vet bed easy enough. Keep us updated with how they're all doing - assuming she's finished whelping that is?
- By pugnut [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:42 UTC
Sounds like you had  a nice pretty straight forward whelping, well done to Mummy and you!
Had a google for what this odd cross may look like and found this on a filipino freead site...

Tufty scrufty dachies, of course you could end up with any combination of features! You'll have to send a link for pics as they grow, could be interesting to see what they turn out like lol :-D
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:44 UTC
She is a small breed, im really shocked at how many she has, i was a bit doubtful that there were only 2 because of the size of her tummy but i wouldnt have thought there could have been 6 of them. Mum seems to have settled down now but she did before this last one popped out so im not sure if she is done yet. There was an hour and 20 minutes between puppy 5 and 6 and i was sure she was finished that time so i will be keeping a good eye on her for any more. Im so tired today, cant imagine how poor truffles feels, she looks exhausted.
- By hillbilly [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:50 UTC
Just be careful when you take her out for a wee.  If she hasn't finished you may get one delivered in the garden, take a torch and a towel just in case.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 20:50 UTC
Aww that picture is cute :) I think they are going to look like the dad he was a shaded red long hair so they should be pretty fluffy, a few of them seem to have more squashed faces than others so maybe they will look a little like mum also. They all have dark faces and bright pink noses too I cant get over how cute they are, especially when they are all squeeking :) Just so sweet. I will upload some photos soon for you all to have a look at the little cuties. :)
- By Goldmali Date 25.11.08 21:40 UTC
I should get my money back for the scan, the vet said "absolutly no more than three" lol!

I can beat that. My (ex) vet said one or two pups for my last litter, she had TEN! Typical scenario unfortunately. :)

Glad to hear all's fine so far.

Here are a few photos
[Mod Removed] Pleas read terms of service

Mum has settled down now and has been out to the toilet also. Im so tired and im starving! Going to go have some dinner then have a sleep i think, if i can stop looking at the puppies long enough :)
- By WestCoast Date 25.11.08 21:53 UTC
Don't leave them unattended.  It's easy for a tired novice bitch to sit on them. :(
- By hillbilly [gb] Date 25.11.08 21:53 UTC
They look adorable and mum looks so pleased with herself.  Hope your OH will watch the puppies for you so you can get some well deserved rest.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 25.11.08 21:57 UTC
Im waiting for her to get off the phone, telling everyone the good news :) I am going to have a sleep on the sofa while she watches them then i will get up when she goes to bed and watch them for the rest of the night.
- By Teri Date 25.11.08 21:59 UTC
Well done Truffles (and you too!) :)

If  were you I'd get your OH to stay watchful over the pups and mum until you've recharged your batteries :)  They really can't be left unattended at this stage as mum will be very tired and may accidentally squash one or more of them.  They really need you on hand now, in shifts with others if available, 24/7 for at least a week if not more :)

You also need to keep an eye on mum to make sure she's drinking well - she may or may not feel much like eating as she'll get after pains when the pups are suckling but you must ensure she drinks so that she produces milk.

You've a lot of work ahead of you and probably at best will get some cat naps for a while but it will be worth it.

Good luck, Teri
- By Misty Date 25.11.08 22:11 UTC
So pleased for you and Truffles.
All the best with them.
Will look forward to seeing more photos as they grow.
- By Goldmali Date 25.11.08 22:18 UTC
I bet those pups will change colour as they grow! They look so similar to Malinois pups at that age -born very dark and then they lighten up. I wouldn't say they are black and tan, more like sable or similar.  Would love to see how they develop as they grow. :)
- By Zajak [gb] Date 25.11.08 23:31 UTC
Congratulations!!!  As hillbilly said watch she doesn't have one in the garden, this happened to me!  The scanner lady had said that my bitch would have 6 pups and apparently she is normally spot on with numbers.  I took her out to the garden immediately after the 6th puppy to see if she wanted a wee and initially wondered if she was straining for a poo, until we saw the puppy at the entrance, luckily my friend was with me and we grabbed a towel off the washing line to catch the pup just in time (a few swear words at the time as you can imagine).  I wasn't convinced she'd finished but didn't expect this one so quickly as she had had a minimum of half hour between pups until then. She went onto have 9, numbers 8 and 9 back in the house thankfully!  The idea of a small bombay sapphire sounds just perfect,  suffice to say I had a little drink after the shock!

All the best with the new babies.

Brilliant, well done to you & Truffles, they look smashing, now the hard work begins!
- By PippaJ [gb] Date 26.11.08 08:12 UTC
Awwww! Congratulations, so glad all is well! Well done Truffles and Scottishwomble!
- By Carrington Date 26.11.08 08:18 UTC
The pups are absolutely gorgeous. :-)

Remember we are all here for any other advice, over the next few weeks. (Even though you have done it before) And you can pop updated photo's in our blog section. :-)
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 26.11.08 08:29 UTC
Well done!! I know it was an accident, but I'm really jealous having just decided to put off having puppies for another year!
- By LindyLou [gb] Date 26.11.08 09:55 UTC
Well done to you all :-) Oh, I can't wait. I'll be going through all this in about 7 weeks time :-D
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 26.11.08 10:58 UTC
We both slept through our alarms this morning i woke up at 10 and came through to find my partner asleep on the sofa, got another vets appointment arranged for 4 now. All the puppies are doing well and im amazed at how good a mother truffles is being. Any little squeek and she is there washing the one that squeeked. Truffles was born with 9 nipples so she has 5 on one side and 4 on the other so the pups seem to be finding it easy to all find a drink when they want one. The pups weigh between 205 grams to 245 grams. Im amazed at the size of them as last time i had puppies i made a graph of the weights for each week and it was stored on the computer, i checked the size of them and the smallest of the rottweilers puppies was smaller than the biggest two of truffles. The two boys are the biggest and the last born girl is a dark brindle. I think i will start a blog as i just cant stop talking about them hehe :)

Now is not too soon to start advertising and vetting potential homes.

Remember that only one in five or more potential enquiries are likely to be suitable.

If you start now you can get to know the people and any niggles about things being right go with your gut.

Your local rescue centre may well be able to help you with ideas for vetting and contracts.

Avoid any place for advertising that will attract impulse buyers.
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 26.11.08 22:15 UTC
We have homes lined up for two of them already, one with the people who own the father and one with a friend with an older dog i also really want to keep one, the other three im sure we will find a home for in time. I wouldnt send any of them to stay with someone i wasnt sure of.

The vet check today went well, the vet said they all looked really healthy and well fed and that mum was looking well also. She did say she should be having the cacium tablets still though as she could get ill trying to make milk for 6 puppies, what are your opinions on this? Is it safe to give her them now she has had the puppies or should her diet be enough for her to feed them? She is having scrambled eggs, chicken, chicken soup, tuna and eukanuba puppy/junior dry mixer, also she wont drink much water so we are giving her a splash of milk in it to encourage her. She seems to be making enough milk at the moment but does seem really worn out.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 27.11.08 21:52 UTC
I thought calcium supplements were generally thought not good now, and can cause eclampsia rather than helping at all. The experts will know better than me! I put glucose in Ellie's water for the first few days, though she didn't seem very keen on it, preferred it plain. Just keep feeding her what you are doing, about 3 - 5 times a day. :-)
- By scottishwomble [gb] Date 28.11.08 19:20 UTC
Ive made truffles and her puppies thier own website, i will keep updating it with new pictures and news of how the puppies are getting on.
