I can't believe the price of them.
Went to get a bag of Parrot mix, Parakeet Mix, Peanuts for the aviary last Sat, thought I'd get some Fat Balls for the wild feathered ones, £1.50 for 6!!! Whats going on why is it getting so designer -ish to feed wild birds.

I'm saving all my left over fat, biscuits crumbs dried bread and old cereal bits from now on and making my own!!

I pay 59p for 6, 79p for 1.5kg of wild bird seed and I've just bought one of those suet blocks with mealworms in for 89p at the local cheapy shop (Au Naturel that's been taken over!).

I make my own for the birds in winter.
Buy the cheapest cheap lard and a big bg of seed/peanuts etc.
Melt the lard in a pan, add in the mix (its almost like making crispy cakles with the kids) Make sure all the mix is coated and then mould into balls, or stick in an old chinese container so you get a square lump of fat. Let it set in the fridge then put out for the birds who will go crazy and love you forever!!!

- By Pinky Date 25.11.08 11:30 UTC
What I need though is a squirrel exterminator other than my cat (eeeeek bad comment) cos the little devils well not so little actually cos they keep pinching the birdie dinner :(

Have a look at these. There are a wide variety of bird feeders that are squirrel proof

I feed the squirrels and I find then they leave the suet alone for the birds- but the birds also steal the popcorn, cereal ect I put out for the squirrels lol

This title made me smile. Years ago I used to work with a nice chap who was very polite and "correct" at all times. He was a great bird lover and I used to get him bird seed, fat balls, etc from the cash and carry. One day I had a box of 100 fat balls in my car for him, they had been there for a couple of days as I kept forgetting to mention them to him. As he walked into the office I suddenly remembered, and without thinking shouted "Richard, fat balls". He knew what I meant, and very dryly looked down to his nether regions, looked up and replied "thankyou very much". I was most embarrassed at the time, but we had many a laugh about it over the years.

That made me giggle!

Hi Goldiemad
The title of my post is obviously many mens dreams!!!

I've had a very similar situation at my work place, they all know that my OH and I are avid bird keepers and wild bird feeders. I only have to mention in the breeding season the 'coming' into colours or 'vent' prosenting and I am met with all sorts of ribaldry and inuendo :)
