Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Dog papers??

Hi all, i want to subscribe to a dog paper either dog world or ourdogs, which one do you think? :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 23.11.08 20:49 UTC
Depends for me which papers breed note writer and feature writers style you prefer, other than that they cover the same bases.

I would get both for a few Weeks through your Newsagent and then decide which you prefer.

You can get an on-line subscription to Our Dogs which is cheaper than the actual paper and may suit you if you don't actually want the physical paper.

When I bought one I found Dog World to be a more interesting 'read' than Our Dogs.

Dog World has more to read in it, are quicker with news and often with show reports too but their breed note writers are very limited in what they can report so breed notes lack a lot compared to Our Dogs. To be honest I think anyone seriously into dogs need both as there are always times when a judge's critiques will only appear in one paper - I'd have missed loads over the years had I not had both. Our Dogs is far superior as far as their website goes, with shows critiques going back years.

I agree with the others - check out both for quite a few weeks and decide which you prefer :)

IME the breed notes in DW are often heavily edited, they always have been but for some reason this is a problem which has become significantly more common- for eg in this week's edition mine have been lacerated with only about 30-40% of what was submitted put into print.  I went into some detail on critiques, from when being noted in the ring through to their preparation for publication and also why IMO some are ready to be published far quicker than others - especially from overseas judges and many of the 'charmed circle' who judge continually it appears all year round.  Perhaps it was the refs to these issues which caused the blue pencil to be razor sharp in it's removal of my musings - it's not as though we're given the courtesy of an explanation after all.

That said DW do allow free access on line to their main news stories, dog mans diary, a few cherry picked articles from regular columnists plus all breed notes and the champ show crits which have been submitted for those breeds too - for OD you would need to pay the subscription price for all of that info.

See now I prefer ourdogs as I feel it has more of the type of things I am interested in plus I have the online edition instead so can always read the backdated copies without having a mountain of papers everywhere.  I get dog world only occasionally when I am expecting a write up that wont be in our dogs.

Like everyone has said get both and decide for yourself.

I prefer DW for articles and columns, so I get that in paper form and subscribe to OD online, which is about half the price of the actual paper if I remember correctly. I then have a paper to flick through, but often see critiques quicker ... particularly as OD is normally online by Wednesday morning. I find DW sometimes crop critiques too, so sometimes see more in OD.

It also gives me something for a sneaky read at work if time allows. ;-)

the fact that dog worlds circulation far far surpasses that of od must tell you something :)

I'm another DW person too.

Me too - I have a subscription to DW, I'd have it over OD any day.

I have a paper copy of DW for browsing and online for OUr Dogs which I use for critiques and breed notes mainly.

Same here. However, has just been very impressed with Our Dogs. Sent my critique in for a show on Sunday night. Got an e-mail on Monday morning from Our Dogs asking me which breed as I had omitted to tell them (can't even blame a blonde moment as I am brunette) Still haven't heard anything from Dog World.

I used to receive Dog World and enjoyed it at first. But very soon, all the very sad news started depressing me and I finally stopped reading it altogether and wouldn't even take it out of the cellophane. I know it might only have been a period, but after hearing 3 or 4 stories about animal cruelty, I had enough! Call me a softy!
