I have just rescued a dog (vaccinated) from a rescue, and mine are vaccinated too, but just leanred Parvo is at that kennel. Their own dogs were present and they were busy and I have been assurred that its isolated. Course, lil dog has runny tummy this morning but was perfect last night after white fish....what are the early signs of Parvo please. He is bright and waggy.
Parvo comes on extremely quickly within a matter of hours and there normally are not any signs of the illness until 7-10 days after it has been contracted. Watery, runny stools with blood in them are an early sign, also there is a horrible smell with parvo rather like an irony smell, if you smell it you will know what it is. They wont eat or drink and they drop weight over night. Just keep an eye for these signs as my friends 3 year old vaccinated lurcher recently contracted Parvo and thanks to his quick thinking he has pulled through after being on antibiotics and fluids.
Thank you. He's a little quiet today, but it has been an exciting 2 days settling in. I have rung my Vet who assurred me that vaccinated dogs don't get Parvo...Hes not got a great appetite this morning, just a handful of fish if that, and a runny poo but thats quite common with changing homes, isn't it?
>I have rung my Vet who assurred me that vaccinated dogs don't get Parvo...
I always thought that a vaccinated dog can still get Parvo (allbeit uncommon)?
Has the vet allready tested the dog to see if he is suitably immue to Parvo and/or knows for sure that all boosters are up to date?

The smell...once you smell it you will never mistake it.
Parvo is not just a bit of runny poo...it is a steep downhill slide to extreme illness. A dog with Parvo is very very ill, very quickly.
Most likely change of enviromment I agree.
Definately his boosters are up to date. Last March in fact. And my girl too. He's had a little fish but is not hungary, and is very waggy when he's awake, just quieter today. But I still feel on edge. My vet was quite specific about vaccinated dogs.
Dont know what to try to tempt him with to eat. I'll get some chicken.x

Vaccines only work if the dog can make antibodies to the given agent..not all can -
especially if they have a compromised immune system.
I am aware of one case of a vaccinated Rough collie dying from Parvo but put into the context of the thousands of dogs I've encountered in my lifetime. A blood titre determination is the only sure fired way of knowing if a dog is expressing the right amount/type of antibodies to an antigen.
Thank you...I just heard the kennel I got him from on Saturday had Parvo and am distraught and worried. But they assure me it was well contained and all their own dogs were there including a 17 year old yorkie, but I wouldnt have gone in if I had known...they told me not to worry
> He's had a little fish but is not hungary, and is very waggy when he's awake, just quieter today. But I still feel on edge.
It's easy to say 'don't worry', but you can't help it. I'm worried out of my head becasue my dog hasn't had a pooh in 2 days following a day of the 'runs', nothing can put your mind at rest untill they are back to normal :(
Keep a close eye on him for deyhdration - checking for 'tenting' in the skin and checking the capillery refill in the gums.
Try to get him to keep his fluid intake up. Have you tried hand-feeding him? When my last dog had a bad stomach he would only eat out of my hand.
Thank you, yes i was hand feeding him...he's yapping at the moment so that a good sign
Just to say thanks...went to Vets (did I say?? senile!!) and she thinks just change of environment...hoovered up some lamb and rice spilled in error and so had chicken breast...think I may have been a tad overreacting hahaha, new mum syndrome.
Thanks for help x

Our pup Fudge had parvo very recently, he has been out of hospital for 5 weeks now.
There vomit will also smell bad and they just won't be themselves (we only had Fudge for 5 days before he became ill so I no it can be hard when you havn't had him long but you'll no the difference even in such a short time) a long with what the other posters have said eg diarrhea that smells really bad. Parvo is spread by coming into contact with infected vomit or feces, and can still be present for up to one year at home etc,(as told to us by vets) we were advised not to allow any pups or dogs that were not vacinated into our home for this period of time,(this was on vets advice) although as said but another poster vacinated dogs/pups can get parvo it does depend on there immunity, they did say our Bo 5yrs(fully vacinated when pup and boostered yearly) should be fine but i still kept a close eye on her. I hope he gets better soon, and I hope its not parvo wouldn't want anyone to go through what we did, but saying that he did pull through, and even now as he chews on my laces he is totally gorgeous :-)
Let us no how he gets on.
Diane

Just saw your latest post after I wrote mine, ive been a bit slow today lol, glad he is ok :-)
I only picked him up Saturday Diane so many thanks for your info...he is nice and bright today but I will keep a very watchful eye..thank you again
> he is nice and bright today
Good good! Its very difficult when there "new" you worry like crazy which is natural, glad he is brighter today :-)

> he is nice and bright today
:)
That must be a relief, glad he's perked up :)
Vaccinated dogs can get parvo. My first RR got it at 5 months. Luckily she was a big, chunky girl and was well covered and she made it, but it was a close run thing. The smell is unforgettable.
About 20 years ago I rescued a JRT from kennels. He had been a stray. The kennels had vaccinated him before re-homing. He was a lovely little fella but within a day or two of our bringing him home he became very ill. We took him straight to the vets who diagnosed parvo. They thought he must have picked up the virus prior to being vaccinated, while he was a stray. Despite all the treatment the vets could give - he was on a drip for a week, he died. I was devastated - so I guess vaccinating doesn't save a dog if it already has the virus.

A friend of mine has just, this last 2 wks, lost 6 dogs including an adult bitch and her full litter of pups who'd had their first vaccination, to parvo. The 2 adult dogs were vaccinated she has closed the house down got her dogs in separate rooms in a bid to stop it spreading, has bowls of disinfectant etc from the vets outside each room and sprays herself head to toe when she goes from 1 room to another. Her last affected dog died last wednesday with non of the others showing symptoms but I got a call last night about 11 pm telling me another of her adult males has started to vomit.
It is believed the infection came in with a returned juvie who's owner was rushed into hospital, how many of us help out in such a manner? Needless to say my planned visit for last week didn't happen her vet is quite concerned as he's the one vaccinating her animals so knows they're upto date and admits they've got milder symptoms than he would expect but the fact they're dying from it is worrying, they have been tested with a positive parvo result.

That is horrific, Schip. Poor poor lady. :-(
M.
This week it was in the local newspaper. A vet has diagnosed the first case of Parvo in the city for ten years.
I am now petrified my little one will get it. It didnt help that it said in the paper "if your dog shows symptoms of parvo get it to the vets immediatley" My first thought was - What are the digns of parvo?!!! Thanks to the forum i have now found out and will be much more alert. Cheers.

Schip that is not good. All those dogs who are vaccinated against and they are still passing from it..
I really do hope the remaining dogs survive..
The ones who have got it, are they in the vets or is she keeping them in her home??

How awful it is your worst nightmare, we think we are ok if they have been vaccinated it just goes to show. What area does the lady live in?

Thats so very sad to hear, your poor friend must be devastated. It is a very rapid debilitating virus. Our pup had his first injection about 10 days before we adopted him from Battersea, and then 5 days later came down with parvo, we feel extremely fortunate that he survived, everyday we feared the worst. So sorry to hear this.

SueJaw they're at home, it really is bizzare, I've seen parvo in dogs back in the days when it first appeared horrific symptoms for many. These guys are so mildy affected it would appear she thought there was something in their food that upset their stomachs only to get up to find dog dead next day, one of her adult bitches I'd had here for show training last year, she had to be pts as she had the more classic symptoms and the vet advised it was kindest to pts.
I am concerned for her too as she's disabled and her dogs are her life I've not been able to get hold of her all day, hopefully she's just very busy or been to the vets again.

Hope that your friend and her dogs are ok. Does she have anyone to help and assist her through this living in the house or is it just her?
So the vet didn't even want to try and save the bitch?? He wanted her PTS before anything was done for her??

No the vet has worked very hard to help her save all the dogs that have gone down with it, this particular bitch suffered horrifically and they both agreed that it was in the bitches best interest to pts believe me when I say both these people would do their utmost to save any animal.

Apologies to that then. I read the post in one way and you meant another.
I do hope to god that her remaining dogs survive through this.. How many dogs did she have and how many have passed due to this nasty episode that she is going through?
How many of her remaining dogs have got signs of it..
So wish there was something i could do for her...

Seems the dog that appeared to come down with symptoms a few days ago is negative, her adult son had given the dog a treat that was red coloured and he'd brought it back a few hrs later - said son just didn't tell his mother what he'd done!
She has lost 6 dogs including the litter of pups but has now gone 8 days since the last one came down with symptoms so fingers crossed the worst is over.
My goodness me, what tragic stories and dreadful experiences....WHAT a deadly disease!! So many experiences shared, so much learned by all the readers.
Just to add that my little rescue is fine and Parvo was not at the kennel after all. But thank you for sharing your stories. and so many tears and sadness for those little souls that didn't make it through, and thoughts sent to their bereft owners.xx
