Hy

My bitch has gone into welp today, its not a first litter, but I am not happy with the way things are progressing.   She has done the shaking etc.  Shredded all the papers. Her back end is now covered in a greeny liquid, you know what its like when they give birth and the water bag with the pup, well its like that, but no pup has emerged, in all the years I been having pups I have not seen this.  She is 4 days early, as usual.

Don't know whether to contact my vet or not, any advice will be most welcome.  think its going to be a very long night LOL !!!

I think you should ring the vet, sounds like a pup is stuck and the green stuff is bad too. if his bags has burst it may have died in the birth canal and prevent the others from coming out and they may starve of oxygen and die. Get to your vet asap. i know its emergency this at this time of night but hopefully your prepared.

Good luck hope all goes ok

Thamks Louise,  for replying quickly, I had thought of that myself, but just wanted reassurance.  Will give vet a call now.

He should give her a jab of oxytocin if you take her in or he comes round (latter better) vets say she will be on her way within the hour but i know of pups that have been born on the floor in vets room then in waiting room on way out and in car so be prepared, many hands would help. Dont leave it too long before help, you wont want the what if regrets of a dead pup.

Keep informed

The BOTB says green is bad before puppies appear I think, best get her to the vet for a look. Keep us posted!

i would phone vets as green staining before a pup is born can be a sign something is not right ,

i had exactly this with my bitch, a pup (lunar the pup is now a healthy 15 months;-)) was stuck she needed emergency c sect (5 live pups delivered) hope all goes well for you.

Hi Irene,

Fingers crossed only just caught up with your thread.

Sometimes the green stuff does come first with the first puppy if it is a bit slow in coming. Your probably sorted by now but just wanted to say don't panick just yet.   I always say if you see the green stuff a pup should be born within 15 mins or off to the vet.

I have had a couple green puppies perfectly fine that have been so green they still have a green tinge for 2-3 weeks.

i had exactly this a week ago today!  Straight off to the vets for an emergency c-section, 7 healthy puppies and mum is doing great, green is definately not a good thing before first puppy is born. i got to help deliver them all, an amazing experience, though very worrying at the same time.

Acting early is definately my advise as 18 months ago i had a very slow labour, waited a little and then a little more (not wanting to do a c-section as i was terrified i would lose my girl) things went from bad to worse and ended up with 3 dead puppies and a ruptured uterus and bitch nearly bled to death - thankfully my girl and her remaining 9 babies all done fantastic and we kept 3 puppies too. Needless to say as soon as i felt things were not progressing as they should this time (different bitch of course) i didnt wait a minute longer!

I hope all is well - let us know how you all are
Good luck

Hi

Just a quick update and thanks for your messages.  Pearl had to have a c section. Vet tried to get the stuck pup out but did not work.  She had 3 pups, 2 dogs died so I have a little bitch here just now. Mum is sleeping at the moment, have given pup a small feed of puppy milk.  Got to take mum back to vet for a check up tomorrow.  So hopefully this little one will make it.

Hello Irene

Sorry to hear Pearl had to have a c section.  Never easy to loose a pup at anytime.
I hope Pearl and her pup go on ok from here.

Take care

Irene, Sorry to hear this. Fingers crossed the little one will make it.    You have probably already been doing this but was just thinking best survival chance is getting her feeding from Mum.. Hope to hear positive news later.

Hi everyone.

Just a quick update, Mum was back at the vet tonight for a check up, everything is fine and she is now feeding pup, I had to feed put till about 6am this morning just really till the effects of the anesthetic wore off.  Pearl has been eating well today and drinking plenty, will weigh the pup again tomorrow to make sure she is putting on weight.

Thanks for all the advice and good wishes, It was gut  instinct that I knew something wasn't right, there is always someone on champdogs to give advice when really needed, you are all great.

Good luck to all the others who have recently had pups.   I've now to phone the people who had booked a pup from this litter and tell them what happened.
