I am looking for advice for a friend who has recently contacted the KC to add her new affix onto her bitches name only to be told that the bitch isnt in her name anymore and that she was transferred to a new owner three months after she was registered in my friends name. Now this NEVER happened and she still has the bitch, and still has her registration documents and AHT tests paperwork.
She has asked to see the paperwork for transfer of ownership and asked to see the signature which was supposedly hers but apparently the KC has lost or destroyed this and so there is no evidence.....!!!
The AHT paperwork has the KC registration number on and also her microchip number so that is some sort of evidence I guess but not sure if enough to sway the KC?

Has this happened to anyone else and if so how did you get it sorted out ....

I think its absolutely disgusting that anyone could do this without the owners knowledge and that the KC dont keep documentation as evidence.
Its a good job she didnt find out when it came to registering puppies 

If anyone can offer advice on how to progress this please let us know

Have the KC offered to examine what paper work she has and possibly revert the registration?  I would think if this fraud has been carried out for monetary gain, ie to sell a dog or register puppies from it which I feel it must have been, it would be worth contacting the police.

All that the KC has said at the moment is that they will write to the other person who now *supposedly* owns the bitch?
Luckily no litters have been registered under the bitches name - (yet)!!

Then I would wait to see the outcome of their investigation.  I would expect them to be as keen as your friend to get this resolved.

A couple of questions spring to mind..

did your friend breed the bitch, if so.. was all this done on-line..
If she didnt breed her, what have her breeders said about it..

it may seem a strange thing.. and I may be way off mark, but.. transferring dogs into ownership is also now allowed online.. not just initial registrations..

COULD it be possible that another owner from the same litter, has perhaps typed in a wrong no. (the litters are registered with consecutive numbers) all it takes is one wrong digit, I am not entirely sure this is ALL that is required, since I register online, but transfer by snail mail... but its worth checking

Another thought, how would anyone else know the k.c.registered name of the puppy, either than the breeder, or another buyer from the same litter.  This is weird cant figure out how it could happen, after all none of us call the dogs by their registered name, just pet names.  It could well be that someone has changed ownership of one of the other pups and typed in the wrong number, easily done.

When transfers are done online how do the KC check this is correct- do they still not require a signature or written approval from the previous owner/breeder?

It could easily have been a clerical error rather than fraud, with a litter sister being sold and the wrong one transfered.

I had the wrong dogs endorsements lifted in this way, and had to write to KC to sort it out so the right one was lifted, and the endorsement put back on the one taken off by mistake.

If they had access to the Breed Records supplement then the names and details of all the registered pups are there to see.

Had something similar happen to a breeder who did a joint ownership on one of her dogs.  Only when it came to breeding said bitch did it come to light that the 'other' owner had crossed out the breeders signature as first owner then devious madam had sent a letter explaining the tampering as 'the breeder signed in the wrong place' so the KC transfered said bitch into single ownership to someone who'd not even bred or paid for it.

The breeder found out contacted the KC as their own regs 'claim' not to allow registration if there is any obvious tampering on a form, they agreed that was the reg's but as they'd recieved a letter of explanation from the new owner they let it thru without clarifing it with the breeder!  It is now another year down the line and all they've done is freeze the bitches registration and said they could do nothing else - I'm sorry if you can prove the letter and signature were fraudulant then you can undo the false registration.  So now this matter has to go to court to sort out what in reality is a KC mess due to not following their own regs its ridiculous.

Even if an animal is registered online there are still data trails to show how and when it was done etc. 

No they dont require a signature.. just as they no longer require a signature for registering a litter..

However.. they do sent out confirmation letters to previous owners, in the same way they send out letters to stud dog owners, giving them time to reply in the event that a particular stud had NOT been used..

Assuming they did sent out letter to original owner (in this case the breeder, your friend).. there is every chance that it could have got lost in the postal system.. this has happened to me..

All my registration documents were sent out.. 3 years later.. I still have not recieved them.. I had to pay for copies to give to my puppy owners..

When I had an ordered 5 generation pedigree lost in the post they sent another free of charge.  Perhaps it varies with who you speak :-)

I have had many dealing with the KC, and they have been more than helpful.. but this one occassion.. was a nightmare.. my pups were by this time 15 weeks, in new homes.. and I had owners asking me..where are the papers .. I gave the owners my girls registration no.. so they could contact the KC themselves to prove that I had indeed registered the pups.. just didnt have the papers..

KC insisted that they had sent them.. all I could do was pay for duplicates..

this is the only time that I had less than helpful person, I am happy to say :-)

Transferring online wasnt an option when this was supposed to have occured  but I have told the owner of the possible clerical error option? I just find the whole thing really worrying ................

2 years ago I had regs lost in the post, phoned the KC and they sent me out a duplicate set free of charge within days.
