How many of you vaccinate against KC, a sad event yesterday, a Great dane breeder lost 2 danes to it, and her 17 week old is very poorly with it also, she thinks she may have brought it back from a show.
I dont vaccinate mine, but they all have had KC, and was told they couldnt get it again.
I know it serious in puppies and elderly dogs, and theres so many strains, how can you vaccinate against them all??
Do you think its worth vaccinating them, also our kennels doesnt insist on them being done either.

I don't routinely vaccinate, as the vaccine doesn't cover all strains. They can still get it after they have had it because of all the diffains. They do seem to develop some sort of immunity to it, but never assume they won't get it again.

I've never vaccinated against kennel cough not have my dogs ever had it in 25 years.  I do spray my dogs and my shoes with Parvocide when I come home from a potentially infections place, like dog shows, or if I've taken a friend to a Vet surgery.  But I do use nosodes which cover it, although I'm sure some will disagree and say that I've just been lucky. :)

mine have had it twice this year ( two have already been vacced against it ) so even if you have the vac done they can still get it.
Although the two that have been done got it only very slightly the 2nd time.
Pup is defo going for a vac before LKA.

I never get cover for KC however we have recently brought a (now) 13 week old bulldog and as were
at a few shows in the coming weeks and knowing that LKA seems to be a place likely to bring it back from Ive had Norman
done for KC,cost me £20.
My others are all older so Im not quite so worried about them.

I do mine for it - but they can get it despite the vaccine, and they can certainly get it more than once - Dorain is prone to it. The vacc only does one bacteria +/- one virus, and there are several that can cause kennel cough, but if they are vaccinated and get it they will generally get it less severely.

I vaccinate all our dogs against KC as many years ago a very good breeder friend of mine lost a young pup to KC.  So ever since then I have always vaccinated as I would hate one of mine to come down with it.  Plus as I show all the time I see it as I am more likely to come into contact with it than a pet dog owner.
Doesn't cost much compared to the price of other jabs.

Emma, which shows do you go to? I've got a friend who wants to start in dachs who wants to go to the major champ shows and breed shows, she'll be made up to meet someone experienced for a bit of guidance?? If you're willing?? Don't want to put any pressure on you...I don't go to many shows these days due to my bad health, and if I do it's Toy or Working day...Have you got an Affix and I can tell her to look up your wins, give her a bit of encouragement! Thanks hun (oh I used to be a Nurse, worked in A&E as a Senior Nurse Manager....last job in Worcestershire, what area do you work in? I had to retire as I got attacked and needed major surgery on my back, so haven't worked since 1996 mind!)

Don't do mine as you can't tell which strain the dog will get, do have the one included with the boster but nothing else. If KC is about and I have young dogs or sick I take special care to keep the dogs in and change my shoes when i have been out, guess I am lucky to be able to do this.

didnt do my pup and he caught it earlier in the year at around 14 weeks. there was a huge outbreak in central scotland at the start of the year. my mum has never done her dogs and theyve never had it on over 20years so its often down to luck!

I believe that the KC vac will cover the more serious strain 'Bordatella', then is your dog catches a cough you know that its a less serious strain they have. Onec a dog has Bordatella, even once its stops coughing it can still infect other dogs for up to three months.  No wonder it does the show rounds.
