Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Help with Great Dane Puppy

Hi All

Am new here, so please bear with me!!
I have a Great Dane puppy, he's 9 weeks old and I have had him since 6 weeks (with hindsight - probably too soon but went on breeders advice). He's very confident, eating well... and has settled in very well. I have always had Dalmatians before and now have a 2 year old staffie rescue aswell - so I am used to raising pups... however, I am having problems with him growling.

My staffie growls at him when he misbehaves or bites her too hard, and he seems to have learnt this from her. Am keen to avoid a dominant dog, so am trying all the tricks in the book. I am training him (he is doing well), grooming him etc... but I just have this growling and snapping when i ask him to do something he doesn't want to do. If I pick him up/take him by the collar to put him outside he growls and snaps - and doesn't seem to care if I isolate him for doing it!! Its not something I have experienced before.
Any initial advice would be appreciated, however, if there are any Dane owners who could help - could you please let me know how to contact you, as I am concerned the advised diet from the breeder could have something to do with it by being too high in protein...and would like a few other opinions...

Many thanks
C

Know nothing about Great Danes but have had this with another breed, I just ignored the pups complaints and carried on doing with him what I wished and by about 4 months he had stopped it. Now I don't know if yours will and is a large breed to have defying you at 6 months but you could give it another month of grabing the collar and draging him where you want him, making no coment as to his behaviour, trying to show him that it will not work, you, at the moment at least, have control and no amount of complaint on his behalf will get him any where. Only comment to praise if he behaves. Sorry I can't help any more but may be someone else will. Ja:)kie

Hi Chloe,

If you email me (click on my name for email address), I will give you contact details of a friend of mine who breeds Danes and will no doubt be glad to help you if you're still having problems.

Out of interest, can you let me know where you got your puppy too, cos I'm nosey.

M.

Try the Great Dane Adoption Society www.danes.org.uk They will be able to offer lots of advice I'm sure.
Good luck! Jackie
