Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Crate training?

Does anyone have a rough guess on how long it is likely to take my new clumber puppy to get used to sleeping in his crate? He is in the hall with the other dogs and doesn't mind going into the crate at night, but he starts crying after 10 minutes and then cries for about an hour. He doesn't need to go out and his crate is clean in the morning but obviously I don't like to hear him so upset. Doesn't seem to bother the rest of them though, they sleep right through it!! I know he has to get used to it, just wondering how long it might take. Thanks, Sam.

Ours were ok straight away, do you always put him in it when he's asleep so he always wakes up in the crate? We used that from day 1 so they got used to going in when they were sleepy not only at night. Now they go in there when they want a kip (hurry up Mum go to bed its lights out!!) really funny. Just persevere.

Well i have crated all of ours when they were small pups, but our last puppy GR got herself in a right state when ever it was time for the crate. I  did nothing different with her than the others butshe went barmy if she saw the crate...crying shaking and would make herself sick.
I never insisted on the crate as she is a very sweet little girl and i wouldnt have wanted her upset for the sake of it.
We managed just fine without it....but they may not be suitable for everyone.

If it were only the puppy and the golden then I would leave him out as I have always done previously, but I am concerned that my bullie is so big and clumsy, and he is so small. She seems to have no control over where she puts her clumsy great feet and I would hate for him to get trodden on or squashed!! He was better last night, settled in 30ish minutes. We're lucky that the house next door is empty at the mo, so at least I don't have to worry about neighbours.

It was probably a week or two before ours was fully settled.  Just like yours he was fine going in but would 'wake up' and start shouting a short time later.  The other time he'd make a fuss is if we put him to bed on his own.  I would use their crates to give the puppy sleep time, and to give my other dog a bit of time out from having his tail chased and his head sat on!!  The pup would yell if he went to bed on his own so I started to put them both in their beds at the same time then let my older one out once the puppy had fallen asleep.  I'm generally at home all day and I didn't want to create a dog that couldn't be left so I would put the pup in his crate fairly regularly throughout the day to get him used to it.

It felt like this stage lasted ages but sleep deprivation bends time doesn't it?!  Just grit your teeth and it will pass - it's worth it to know that the older ones are safe from the sharks teeth and that the puppy can't get into trouble when you're not looking.

Both my dogs have beds in other rooms too but I use their crates at night, if I'm out, or if they're wet.  The doors are open most of the time and typically this is their preferred sleeping place if they want a proper rest; it seems that the other beds are fine for 'one eye open' snoozing but for real upside down, completely unconscious sleeping they put themselves to bed in their crates!!

Good luck :)

My 9 week old pup yelped for about 5 days for 20 - 30 minute intervals now he's good as gold and often disappears into it during the day its really great for him persevere its worth it!!

We have been giving our cocker pup a small (puppy) kong with a few treats stuffed into it every time he goes into his crate.  He can't wait for crate time, he steamrollers past everything and everyone to get to the crate - it seems to be the highlight of his day!  He is an exceptionally greedy dog, though, so this may not work for all.

Things are looking up. Not a peep out of him when we went to bed last night and I was up before him this morning!! He is so wonderful and so much fun, but very chilled out. So great with the kids, now I just have to deal with his shoe fetish. Any shoe will do, even if someone is wearing them!!
