Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cavalier coat not shiny enough?
- By gumi [gb] Date 11.11.08 15:50 UTC
Hiya

Our cavalier has a sort of dull looking coat was wondering what we can do about it
bar the normal grooming

Is there any sort of oil we can put in his food?

we feed Natures Harvest and Chicken science plan kibble

Thanks

Hi,
a teaspoon of normal sunflower oil twice a day in with the food will do wonders - it has for my two Cavaliers. I also find a quick brush through everyday makes their coats extra shiny  :-)

Is he castrated?

Hi yes he is castrated

And clipped?

If he's clipped you will probably never get a nice shiny coat I'm afraid, so if so, stop at once! Even if he's castrated you can improve the look somewhat by using a Mars Coat King rather than clipping to strip out the dead fluffy undercoat they develop. Also brush and comb through, and use a fairly fine tooth comb, every day, that will remove dust which absorbs the natural oils, and will also help distribute that natural oil through the coat. My friends often comment on how soft and shiny my Cavaliers' coats are, and I don't do anything unusual except brush and comb thoroughly every day. :-)

Try adding a raw egg to his food once a week too.
