Just come back from ringcraft and noticed that when we do a triangle he moves very well, no issues.

The up and down is proving a problem in which i feel like i am either dragging him or he is glued to the side of me. Anyone any tips of how i can get him to move nicely on the up and downs without being stuck to my side or me dragging him???
He is run on a loose lead...

I was given a basic tip, we will work on it to see if it helps, but thought i would post here to see if anyone else has any ideas.

Do you always do a triangle then up and down?  Have you ever tried starting with an up and down?

Or maybe try doing up and down to the corner and back, so similar to first and 3rd leg for triangle.

We generally do triangle and then up and down in the hall. Today we also did just an up and down and he was still the same.

Just want to get him sorted for our next show. Its something he has just started doing.

have you tried running him on the other side ?

Yep we tried that and it made no difference, i'm all out of ideas apart from holding a treat in my right hand to coax him in order to stop the dragging. But being stuck to my side is one thing i need to stop

do you do heelwork training at obedience classes?

this encourages the dog to be close so if you do give them a miss for a while.

I do obedience but not close work. i hold the treat out wide so he's not right up next to me. I am mindful of this and the trainer is too. Its only the Good Citizen awards we do, not high end obedience.

Have you tried circles before you start your up and down?

We do a circle not lots, maybe that might be an idea if i do a few more. Just need to break this habit he's got and then we should be fine.

Each time he drags do a circle then continue - it disorientates them so they aren't sure what is happening - hard to explain so hopefully you some idea?

I'll try that also Rachel. Anything is worth a try
