- By pitlover [us] Date 03.11.02 23:12 UTC
My apbt "roxy" went into heat about 6 weeks ago my apbt "hurley" got to her a week into it and so we just kept them together. She is showing all possiable signs of being pregnant(her "thing" has not went down all the way and her nipples are hangging to the ground, i also felt aroung a bit and there are lumps in her tummy) I am no vet but it seems to me that she is. I have brought her in from the cold just incase and she is eating double what she was ?

Hi pitlover
It seems that you are a novice, no offence meant.
Go to your vet immediately, he will probably not need to do an ultrasound, just feel your female.
To be honest if the price of an ultra sound scan is too much, what happens if your girl needs a caesarian ?? go to your vet and get some advice on whelping etc just in case.
- By pitlover [us] Date 04.11.02 02:11 UTC
I was not aware that all they did was feel, my vet wanted to do a ultrasound and i don't see why that is nes. if there is no problems. Money is not a problem or an issue at all, I just don't see why i should have to pay for an ultrasound when i have a perfectly healthy dog. And besides i just asked a simple question I didn't ask for rude coments.

Agio wasn't being rude, just blunt and voicing what many of us thought .... Dog breeding isn't really a polite genteel subject in the first place. ;) :)
Ultrasounds are now commonly done for pregnancies. I'm sure your vet will explain why. It rules out false pregnancies which is does occur and fools everyone.

He/she will and probably can give you better advice on this matter than this "Board" since there is direct contact with your bitch. It's much more proficient than email :)
good luck,
toodles

Hi pitbull person,
Well she sounds to me like she is going to have puppies, they usually give birth about 9 weeks after mating give or take a day. If she is still swelt on the backend and has enlarged breast's & you can feel lumps in her tummy then there is no need to see a vet unless she goes into labour & has problems but most large dogs whelp easily in my experience. You should be able to feel the puppies kicking & moving by about 6 -7weeks if you lay your hand on her belly gently when she is asleep. But they will stop moving usually a few days before she gives birth so don't worry too much.
If you need more help e-mail me on Shonagh_100@yahoo.co.uk & i'll try my best!
Good luck
Shonagh

thank you for your responce, It was much appriciated. I am not stupid about taking my dogs to the vet, if there is a problem I will. I know a couple breeders around here(VA,USA) And many have told me that taking your dog into the vet can be a uneeded bill when they are healthy. I know how to deliver and when there is a problem what to do... I just am getting excited about having a litter so i wrote in this forum. I hate that everyone jumps down my thoat, I love my bitch and this is her first as well as mine. thnks for your reply.

Hi Pitlover.

Goodluck, I don't think people mean to sound harsh just offering advise and showing concern.

I did think from your post you sounded like a novice so that is why people ask questions and give direct advice.

I noticed in you mail that you say you know how to deliver etc but then at the bottom have said it is the first for your dog and yourself so you can see where the confusion comes in.

As said 100s of times before written comunication can be difficult on a board.

BFN and very good luck with your dog.

Pam

I think the reason posters have been blunt with you is that it would appear from your initial post that this was not a planned litter, where you had carefully considered the compatability of the two dogs as parents of a good litter.

Most posters on this board feel passionately about responsible breeding, especially with the big powerful breeds, where temperament is paramount (though it should be in all breeds).

Also Pit Bulls are ilegal in Britain, and this is UK based board :D

We do have an experinced past Pit bull owner who posts as Mr Murphy.

Hi Again,
Well taking a bitch to a vet when she is in pup can be more stressful than ever if she dosen't like the vet (which dog does?) it can cause her to panic and reabsorb her puppies if in early pregnancy or abort them if she is later on in her pregnancy. So if she is healthy & doing fine then there is no need for unnecessary trips to the vet.
And i do agree with other posts on here that the temperament of your pitbulls should be paramount & good homes should be found with responsible people who know about the breed, as you would surely not want a puppy you have bred to grow up into an unruly dog.
Good luck & let us know how many she has!

Hi Shonagh, I've never heard of a reabsorb/abortion that could be directly related to a visit to the vet. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I'd hate to think of anyone not taking a pregnant bitch to the vet when she maybe needed to be seen because, they think there it's a big risk to the pregnancy. As to which dog does like the vet - mine :D!
- By eoghania [de] Date 05.11.02 13:59 UTC
Mine too :D :D
Except while they love the vet --- they hate that blasted metal table  ;) :D

Sara, the first dog I took to my present vets was a wolfhound. John looked at me with an absolutely straight face and said "OK, now lift her up onto the table while I get the stepladder." Took me a moment to work out that he was joking :-).

You obvious haven't met my vets or my other half Sara! Mind you, I do sometimes wonder what patients make of this fella with no white coat, a shaggy beard and cartoon socks :-). (The nurses supply the socks - today's effort are electric blue, and say 'Sex Appeal - Please Give Generously'!)
- By steve [gb] Date 05.11.02 15:04 UTC
How come you know so much about your'e vet socks ?????????????

When I used to take my Golden Retriever the vet wouldn't let us leave till he'd been down on his knees and given Louis a cuddle first :)

When Chienne was a puppy, I got spooked by the vet. He liked her....way too much
Seriously, the first time we brought her in, he examined her, stepped back and said, "She is a REALLY nice dog. Are you sure you want to keep her?" At the time, I thought he was kidding.

After her puppy shots were over, several months passed. I took her in to be spayed. That afternoon we went to pick her up, he was holding her and didn't want to give her up. Even hubby thought he was trying to take her away from us.

I never returned. Even though it was a very nice vet practise. I just didn't appreciate his over-appreciation of my dog. I still wonder that if hubby hadn't been there, would I have had to fight the vet for her to come home???  ;) :O :P :D

When I took *Delores* to meet my vet for the first time and her first jab, he stood back and took a good, long, hard look at her and then said in a very calm and measured voice .. "In thirty years of practising veterinary medicine, I have only, ever been bitten once ... and that was by a German Wirehaired Pointer bitch" :D lol

hi eog,
i have just changed vets and he is great, and a sense of humour, it was worth the £25.00 to have a good laugh, he had his black lab there as i had last app of the day, he said "don't we think of our dogs as little people until you see them eating cat s*** then they want to give us a big slobbery kiss" i thought you are my kind of man, won't tell you how the rest of the convo went, but there are some very humourous ones out there it's just finding them, regards tina

No by all means i'm not saying don't take your bitch to a vet if you think there may be a problem, but some people take the bitch 2 weeks into her pregnancy for bloodtests and then scans later on & there is absolutely no need for it really.I worked in a veterinary practice for over a year and have seen many a bitch come in to see the vet so they could tell the over eager owner whether or not their dog was pregnant and i knew of quite a few who were pregnant at the start but after 6 weeks there was nothing there & the vet put it down to stress from the visit to his surgery.
A lady with a Neopolitan Mastiff tried for years to breed her bitch but every time she brought her to the vets she would turn into a shivering wreck she would always be in pup but at the 6 week scan there was no puppies. The vet said she was reabsorbing the puppies due to stress.
So the vet told the lady to leave the bitch once she was mated and not fetch her in unless there was a problem. Unfortunately with the first litter there was only 2 pups born and the bitch turned on them after a few days and killed them both. But the bitch was mated again 1 year later at 6 years old & the bitch had 11 healthy blue & mahogony pups although they all had to be hand reared as the bitch did not like being a mother at all.But i take my hat off to the lady for hand rearing 11 large babie's to 8 weeks old & she done them all proud!
Bye
Shonagh.
