Topic Dog Boards / Health / dragging his bottom
- By weim1 [gb] Date 07.11.08 11:31 UTC
Hi, hope someone can give advice. My pup is just over 5mths old now. He has been wormed by vet when he had his jabs and I wormed him again on vets advice because he was dragging his bottom a lot. He is still dragging his bottom. Any thought on what could be wrong with him. Dont want to give him anymore wormer in case it does him harm.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

It may be a problem with his anal glands but I would have thought he was too young to have this problem.  Worth taking him to the vet, maybe try a different one in the practice?    What do you feed your puppy?  The reason I ask is maybe he is not getting enough roughage in his diet and I know some people will feed weetabix each day in their diet.    A raw diet usually helps prevent anal gland problems.

Scooting like this is invariably due to uncomfortable anal glands. Get the vet to show you how to empty them. :-)

Ditto, seems like his anal glands, but also check he hasn't a hair protruding from his bottom, or 'clinkers' :-D

what are clinkers?

Pieces of dried excrement which may be attached to the fur. (at least that's what I call them)..

I have this proble with pom/chi she has been wormed and the vet has checked her over and emptied her anal glands twice now 2 different vets.No sign of anthing but she does scoot mainly after a poo.Nice on thecarpet when she gets indoors. Mia is 6moths old and has done this since we first had her. She is raw fed so I dont think roughage is the problem. Any ideas or do I just keep going at the anal glands.

I have this occasionally too - I think it depends on what she has eaten - lots of grass or anything that doesn't evacuate cleanly!!!!  If I notice her doing it after she has 'been'  I use some loo paper and clean her up before she gets near my carpets!
