Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Liver
- By georgepig [gb] Date 06.11.08 13:55 UTC
I have started to give my boxer some heart now and again and he seems ok with it.  I was wondering whether dogs can have raw liver (I'll freeze and defrost first) and if so can they have it from any animal e.g. pig, ox, whatever is cheapest!  It wouldn't be a huge part of his diet as he is fed complete, it would be more of an extra along with chicken wings and now the heart!

Also if I dry it out in the oven to make it like a chew will it stink my house out and what's the best way to do it?

Cheers!

yes, my boy loves it. not to much though as it is rich and can give the runs.

liver cake is a good way to make it into a treat. but yeah, your house will hum. things we do for love eh?

if you want to dry it (and you can cope with the STINK ) put thinish slices on a baking tray smear it all over with garlic paste then put in a low oven (approx 100/120c) turn occasionally and leave it there till done (3-4 hrs). don't cover/seal the storage for at least 24 hrs. This will keep for months, goes thru wash in jeans pocket without mushing, is still edible :-O (it fell on floor when I shook jeans and got 'hoovered) drawback is it's VERY noisy being crunched in class :-)

I might try doing that tatty-ead :)
Yes GP, they can eat it raw (mine do) Pigs liver/kidneys raw, or cooked for training.

How mad am i but i still don't have a recipe or instructions on how to make live cake.

Anyone help on this please?
- By Misty Date 06.11.08 22:08 UTC
Could you post your liver cake recipe please Astarte? The one I've been using isn't all that great, it comes out of the oven very dry and crumbly and is quite difficult to cut up into treat-size bits.

er... i don't really use a recipe as in weights and measures, just blended liver, garlic, flour, egg and water till it looked a cake mix consistancy then baked it till firm. if you search there are a few posted on here, tuna cake to.

I chatted to a lady who uses porridge oats instead of flour. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

I put oil in mine as well and it gives it a brownie texture and doesn't crumble when baiting with it.

I'll try the oil thanks and see if it makes any difference. I use ground rice instead of flour, don't know if that affects the texture. (Gave up flour when we over to raw food). The dogs like the liver cake anyway but it would be easier to use if it wasn't so crumbly.

Totally agree on the oil (I use my Salmon oil) much easier to work with.

I bought a Dehydrator for liver and game a couple of years back, aside from a Blaster..its the best bit of kit I ever bought. (smell reduction in my Kitchen is a god send)
I think Im immune to it now after all these years..to the point I think I quite *like* the smell..and tripe

Hmmm well after all the remarks about the stink I guess he'll just be getting it raw then.  Although does it actually smell worse than if I was just cooking liver in a pan or whatever for myself to eat?

\If you don't mind cooking Liver for yourself then it isn't unpleasant at all.
- By georgepig [gb] Date 09.11.08 23:24 UTC
Might give it a whirl then - I must be weird in thinking that liver doesn't smell bad at all :-o
I'll prob do it after Thursday though as I have a load of girlies coming round and they may not appreciate it LOL!
