Topic Dog Boards / Health / skin of the sheath was rolled inward!
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 05.11.08 12:50 UTC
Hi, My almost 6 month old boy was playing tug with my other dog today and suddenly yelped!
He was laying on his tummy as my other dog is quite a bit smaller than him enjoying the play session when he yelped, jumped up and started licking his penis. I quickly had a look and felt that the skin of the sheath was rolled inward, but his penis wasn't exposed. I instinctively squeezed it back to normal and he is happily playing again now.
Has anyone else ever had this happen?
It was all over in a matter of seconds and he is just fine now.
I was wondering if he had gotten a bit excited during the game, his pinky came out but because he was laying flat on his tummy, legs out back, when it retracted the skin rolled inward??? (just a guess)
He has never had this happen before.
Thanks in advance

Oh yes!!
Lucky they have the tuft of hair on the end to gently pull forward and put things right :-)

Hi Tooolz,
Thanks for the quick reply, he doesn't seem to be bothered by anything else downbelow :)
In fact, as I was busy searching the net for info and posting on here, Charlie was hurling himself around the garden and is peacefully sleeping just now.
More grey hair added to me though!!! :)

Most of the time when my dog sits down (he slouches LOL) his willy 'pops out', sometimes if he gets up fast it shoots back in and the outside rolls in with it, but he sort of sticks his bum up and does a little stretch and everything slips back to how it should be!!! You know that if Buster's stood funny, he's sorting out his willy!!

Sorry to hijack your post, Floyd had something strange on Saturday evening, he got up as if he was going to his bed and it was like he couldn't walk properly, when I went round the back of him (sorry to be crude about this but finding it hard to find the right words) his bum was going in and out like he would when he wants to do a pooh or pass wind, but his bum was constantly doing this and when I came back round the side of him, his penis was half out and the bit that holds it was really large, bulging and hanging down, it corrected itself after a few minutes and then he was back to normal, my OH thinks he had a mucky dream, and something about that dogs have to wait until there penis goes back up before they can walk properly.  Is this normal, sorry if I am abit naive, but this is the first time that I have seen him do this, but it looked really uncomfortable at the time and was quite worried.

Yes, it's normal, it must be uncomfortable/sensetive for them and that must be what makes them walk funny.

"During an erection, the bulbourethral gland on a dog's penis can swell so much it is too wide to retract into the sheath. If the erection is prolonged, the penis becomes dry and cannot be withdrawn. To treat this condition, lubricate the penis with water-soluble jelly and slide it back in its sheath. If this is not possible, keep it moistened with lubricant and get veterinary help." taken from here.

I've always had male dogs and none of them have ever needed a vets help to have thier willy popped back in, so don't be alarmed by that part of the quote.

ETA, I imagine that Floyds 'pulsating' bum was just where he was trying to get his willy back in.

LOL
Seriously though,  no it doesn't sound silly, there is not much point in having a male dog if you really can't stand thier 'bits'!!! :)

I'm so used to male dogs that it doesn't bother me, but sometimes guests do have to comment if Buster is sat down with 'it' haning out ("urgghh, dirty dog, put it away"), poor boy, it's not his fault - he doesn't do it on purpose :(

Thanks for that information, told OH if his willy ever needs lubricating he can do that part of it.
