I am going to enter our young lad in an open show in Jan.  The question is our breed only have JD/B, PGD/B etc.  Do i enter him at only just 6 month old into a breed class, which he will be the youngest or do i enter him into Any variety working PD/B.  Or AV puppy stakes MPD, can i enter this or is it just for the winning pups etc.

I've got a similar issue (not just at open shows).  Got a pup of six months who will be in Junior AVNSC at LKA :-(

At open shows I've entered him in Junior for the breed classes (no puppy, but want to support the show & classes) but also AV puppy gundog & stakes classes - all good practice (we're gonna need it ;-))

I would enter the JD/B because it is always nice to compete against your own breed plus they always declare a best pup in breed (dog or bitch under 12 months) so even if you dont win your class because it is up 18 months then you could still win best puppy.  But then again if it is a small open show you may be the only entry in the class.
AV working PD/B can be entered as well but this class is done after all other working breeds have been shown so most pups are tired out by the time you get to them. Plus they usually happen just before the group so if you are due to compete in best pup in group then you dont want to be in the ring a 2nd and 3rd time straight away.
The AV stakes (puppy or otherwise) are held after all the groups so right at the end of the day so they get a lot of entries even at opens because any breed can enter.

Personally I would enter just the JD/B breed class as it is a first outing but maybe AV working PD/B as well if yours is a breed that always gets a few entries.
Make sure it is a fun experience.  Get in lots of ringcraft and loud noises before going.
And of course, HAVE FUN :)

Edited to say - To maddog, avnsc at LKA has loads of entries, expect a very long class, I wish you luck but a 6 month puppy in a class that size will probably be overlooked unless they are super mature for their age.  We own standard smooth and well as mini smooth dachshunds.  Their is no breed class for the standards so decided to save my money than go in avnsc.

Definately in the breed class....if he is unbeaten by another puppy he will be able to go in for BPIS but if you enter AV puppy he can't even if he wins.

Thanks for that, i shall support the breed class with him, our breed is large and don't mature at all quickly but hopefully they will take that into account.  I also think one class will be enough for him at such a young age, lots of treats and fun on the day.

Think I am right in saying if he wins AV puppy he can go into Best Puppy in Show, rules say any unbeaten puppy so even if you enter a breed class and are beaten but not by a puppy and then go on to win AV Puppy or indeed any other AV class you are able to enter the BPIS ring.

P.S. this does not apply to adult dogs over 12 months.

Yes  i think Nova is right, i once put a pup in avp which she won and she was aloud to go on to the group stage, but i think this rule only aplies if there is no puppy class in your breed, my judge told me she could go into the group, if in doubt phone the secretary she will know

I entered my boy once in a PG class at an open show. He was just in junior but no classes for him. The PG class was huge and we still managed a VHC place, so goes to show that sometimes it is worth it and as other have said its all great practice.

Yup that's right, if there's no puppy class for your breed you can enter AV without entering a breed class, and if you're an unbeaten puppy you can go forward to the puppy group. The same applies to veterans, if applicable. So theoretically it's possible to have two puppies of the same breed in a puppy group.

Personally I would probably be inclined to enter your breed class & the stakes if the judge is the same for both your breed class & AV and all three if the judges for those two classes are different. If you win Best Puppy in Breed you can withdraw from AV Puppy (make sure you do, if you just don't turn up you're counted as a beaten pup), even if you don't win BPIB if you feel your pup has done enough you don't have to go in. The Stakes will probably be either just before or after BIS so you may well have gone home by then anyway.

just to clarify,  you can enter a puppy in an A.V. class even if you have a breed puppy class.  some people have 2 puppies to show of the same breed and put one into the breed class and one in the A.V. class and providing the puppies are completly unbeaten by any other puppy they can both go through to best puppy in group/show.

Oh gooood, he can practice his snooze  he's very good at that.  I'm sure he'll be overlooked, he's a really nice puppy, but maturity isn't his strong point :-D
