Topic Dog Boards / Health / Squealing when going to the loo

The past few days my 3 year old gsd has been squealing when he goes for a poo. There has been no change to his diet. He is going regulary - twice a day. I thought he might have been constipated but his stools are quite soft and sometimes really sloppy. Normally they are nice and firm. Any ideas?

He may have impacted anal glands...if you can't do them you need to take him to the Vet/Surgery Nurse clinic?? Anyway, if it's a change in his behaviour then you should get him checked, just to be on the safe side.

Check he hasn't eaten any sticks, this happened to my girl pug after I caught her chewing up a twig.  If it's been 3 days though I would get to a vet.

Well we took him to the vets he was examined and the vet said that everything looks and feels fine and he doesn't have any ulcers or anything back there. She emptied his anal glands which she said were quite full and has given him a course of antibiotics and we will see how he is after he has taken them. Just got to keep an eye on him. Forgot to ask the vet though should we be taking the dogs to get their anal glands emptied regularly?

Not really, some people regularly empty the glands when grooming but I would be looking at the diet if it occurs regularly.  Many dogs will improve when the level of fibre is increased or some people feed bones.  If it persists, while you are getting to the bottom of it ;-) :-p, you could get the vet to show you how to do it yourself.
