our dog(male) came out of his sheeth. The female dog pulled away from him,he's been out for about 1hour,dirt and everything got on him, what should i be worried?

Have a feeling this may be a wind up again, but in case its not, Ill give you a sensible answer.I take it you mean the female pulled away from him while they were tied during a mating. If this is the case then you should be a litle concerned, as it may have damged either him, her, or both. If this happens again, splash his sheath with cold water. This will wash the dirt and muck from his sheath and the swelling will go down. Im a bit puzzled how he got dirt and muck on his penis during a mating though?

phillippa, use your imagination  -if he was out of his sheath, probably at his biggest then it wouldnt be hard with all that yuck to attract some dirt

Hi Dizzy, I just had an image of this fully uncovered hard thingy being dipped in the dust to get dirt on it, but then in my breeds case, it is a long way from the ground!!!!!

I have sent you a personal e-mail. This can happen but rare.
I have seen a dog not go back properly and it has a name.
something on the lines of dry.........
Some dogs just pop back, others need vets assistance.
If they do this then it is suggested they are not bred with.

Hi Nutkin - paraphimosis :-). Herbie, presume your boy is back where he should be but this can occassionally be serious. I have an old well washed kicken spray bottle that I fill with cold water and pop in the fridge for an hour before a mating. If things don't go back together again, the lad gets a good spray with that. That gives him a wash, and hopefully cools his ardour. If the cold water doesn't do the trick the opening and offending organ are well anointed with KY jelly (if he lies down or is low to the ground, dirt really will stick to the KY). When I trim the boy's bits, I leave a long tuft of hair either side and gently pull on those to 'assist' things into place. Its never happened to me, but if he didn't go back after all that, I'd go straight to the vet. At an early stage the vet can do various things to correct the problem, but the longer its left the more difficult it becomes. I've never heard of it happening, but in the worst case scenario, the dog could lose part of his dongle.

Thanks Sharon
At least someone else had heard of it as well as me.
I saw a Weimaraner take one hour to go back once.
The poor dog!.
He had mated my bitch and then it did not go back.
YUK! What a sight. Its something that everyone that
breeds should be aware about.
Thats handy info about the bottle of water in the fridge.
I have not had a dog of my own do this so not had the
problem. I have heard however that if this happens
it will happen again. But that I dont know as I never used
the sire again that it happened to. As I did not like how the
pups turned out.

Nutkin, I think you're right about not using a dog again if he has a severe paraphimosis because it may well happen again. You're right to say "poor dog" too, as even a mild one it seems to be very painful. The closest I've come to being bitten was when I was helping put a boy (not mine) back together. I knew the dog well, and the snap was totally out of character, but he meant it! I was just lucky to see it coming and get out of the way in time.

I don't think it is a given that it will happen again. A stud dog owned by someone I know had this happen to her male on his first mating experience. He was quite distressed, and she used a packet of frozen peas and KY to get things back where they belong.

It didn't put him off further matings, and I don't think it ever happened again :D
