Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / health testing on small breeds

Hi all I have just had a phone call from my sister and she wants me to go and look at some 6 week old  pups in our area. I know nothing about this breed and whether they have to be health tested for anything specific so thought I'd ask more knowledgable people.

The  woman has the bitch and dog and apparently it was an accident mating but the bitch has had 5 pups and all doing well. She is not going to KC register them although hers are and is advertising them be to sold just as pets - didnt want the expense of registering them i think.  My sister said she sounded a nice lady.

That is all I know and just wanted advise, my sister is not interested in showing or breeding so not bothered about KC registration but i have told her she needs to look into potential health issues. She has a dog already that is cared for very well and it will be a friend for him - he's a jack russell cross.

thanks for your help (off out in a min so wont be able to answer questions til tomorrow but the abouve is all i really know)

It costs very little to register puppies compared to other expenses.  I would be rather suspicious that all is not what it seems here myself.  I think I would enquire, by view of the parents documents or via the KC, if there was any breeding limitations on the pair or if they are exceeding the KC breeding limits. It may be just as she says but I would be loathe to discover I had supported a disreputable breeder.  Even if they have no exceeded limits by not registering this litter they are able to go on and do so.

Umm just the size of the litter makes me suspicious!!  Two is an average litter, three is a big litter, that number that she is quoting is an extreme litter and more than likely the Pom is about double the actual size they should be would think they are more the American Sharon Osborne type.

I would think that they are not the type  I would go for myself but when  people are asking a thousand and more in some ways I don't blame people going for a dog at this price.  I believe that  people are finding it hard to sell their dogs at the moment.

Thanks will check their KC registration, as you say they may have breeding restrictions on them.

She did say to my sister that they normally only have 2 pups and was surprised by the amount her girl had.

My sister enquired on where she got her bitch & dog from and one of them is from Wales, apparently lots of this breedare from there???? This may be very true but i also know that there are a puppy farmers in Wales.

Health testing??

I have known breeders (in Wales, although I'm sure other parts of the country too!) cross them with larger breeds to produce more 'that breed looking' puppies.  I would be surprised if these were quality pups and be very cautious although there are always exceptions to every rule!
Before going to see them, I would speak to a club secretary about health problems and also to see if this breeder is 'known'.

If she could ask what lines are behind it PM me and I'll see if I know any.

I don't think that there are any health tests done on that breed  Slipping patella is one problem but in 30 odd years of owning them ours have never really had any health problems except their teeth don't last long!!  They all live to around the age of 16.

Low blood sugars?  Not a formal test but I've known a number in the grooming parlour, from different lines, who've had a real problem. :)

Thanks perrodeagua wil see what else i can find out. Dont think she claims to be a breeder it was accident. Her daughter breeds but not sure if its that breed - she borrowed a whelping box from her daughter.

If we go to see them I can ask more questions and get an idea about the lady - she may be totally genuine, lets hope so as its not easy stopping people from buying pups like this when at the end of the day all they want is pet that looks like the breed they want.

just a thought do they need 'help' with mating?? my breed needs some assistance. The lady was on holiday and the daughter or someone who was looking after them let them get together.

at the end of the day all they want is pet that looks like the breed they want.

That's exactly the point. :)  This breed bred from poor quality dogs don't look like they should!  The tend to be much larger like German Spitz, so if these are pet bred, she may not be getting what she wants at all. :(

Lorripop is right.  Bitches are usually larger than males and so human help (a step ladder! :) ) is often needed to effect a mating, so an accidental mating...........

There is rarely a cheap option for buying a healthy pet that is a reasonable representative of the breed.  If it's too good to be true, then it normally is! :(

On one breeders website that I was looking at, it says that Poms can be affected by Syringomyelia.

Never known of it in 30 years of owning or breeding them blossom but we actually rarely breed now to be truthful and aren't really in the that world so to speak!

thanks for the help - my sister is beginning to re think!

She told me the price incorrectly (Mod prices removed)

That's a lot of money for an unregistered puppy that could be a cross breed.  I've know some pups bought from pet breeders as that breed that grew as big as a small Cocker! :(

I know of a breeder who's dog is diagnosed with this devasrted.  I would also be suspicious of the sie of litter.

I have just been through this thread and removed the breed and also the prices as it could be construed as advertising. Please be careful when talking about a litter guys :)
