Those of you that feed tinned meat, Chappie or Butchers, How many tins a day for what size of dog? Do you add mixer biscuits or add some complete food??
Those that don't, do you think tinned meat is a waste of time and money?
Interested in your thoughts, Thanks

I would be interested to know this too
I feed hard food with this meat mixed in, as thats the way my sparky loves it hehe, nice and moist... not sure what meat it is, think it depends what my parents buy whats on offer haha, usually tescos i think? or butchers... not really sure... but i think its worth the money, makes the dog food a bit more interesting, cos i wouldnt like to eat just dry food all day!
But would like to see others views on this

I find butchers ok, i sometimes add a little to their dry food, but usually i add minced tripe, they dont tend to like dried food by itself anymore.

I feed complete & tripe to my current dog, but my old dog 'Rocky' (pts in Sept. at the age of 14 & half years :( ) was fed on tinned food. I tried him on many differnt complete foods but he suffered with intolerence to some things (never 100% determined, all done with trial & error) that would make him itchy and/or cause him ear troubles, but Butchers, Chappie and Weebox would be fine for him (he couldn't have the chicken flavours though). I would occasionally add some white fish to his food, or left over veg.
He was approx 30kg and for the last year he had 2 small tins per day (he was old, castrated and not very active so any more would have caused him to gain weight)
I don't think tinned food is a waste of money if it suits your dog.
I feed complete mixed with tinned (AG, Winalot, even tried chappie) just to make it a bit more tasty for my girl. I also mix in tinned sardines/mackerel in sunflower oil every few days, she loves it! I would expect you would have to feed a heck of a lot of wet food to get the same nutritional value as dry complete.

I don't feed tinned, just dry, my girls are happy to eat their food with nothing mixed in. On the odd occasions that I have given one of my girls a tin of food I have found that it made her very loose. (and this is a dog who can eat just about anything without getting an upset stomach!)
However the breeder I am getting my new puppy from swears by tinned food and mixer and her dogs look fantastic on it, but as my dogs do very well on their dry food I dont have any plans to change their diet :-)

I feel that my dogs really enjoy their dinner if it has some meat in it (can't do fresh/frozen - no room). Butchers and Chappie aren't too expensive, especially if mixer is added. Just want to do right by the dogs.
I'm sure years ago dogs, all shapes and sizes, just got 1 tin a day, plus some mixer and any leftover scraps.
I just want to be sure that they're still getting all they need, as dried complete seems so complicated.
Do you think tinned food is worse for dogs teeth. Mine swallow kibble without crunching it much anyway.
Oh, what to do.................

Well we recently looked after a friends Poodle who ate tinned food and her breath smelt really bad, whereas my Cavalier who has been on dried food all her life has never had bad breath but has lovely teeth. Although the Poodles breath smelt bad, her teeth still looked nice and clean.

Probably slightly off topic but instead of the tinned meats you could buy as cheaply tins of finish a bit can of Tesco s value pink salmon is only 80p in tescos, you get their value tuna for about 30p a can, pilchards for less that 20p a can. Just a thought.

When I'm giving my girls tinned meat I use one tin of meat between my Goldie, Collie and Sheltie, shared out in quantities to suit their size and appetite, it gets mixed in with the complete, I also use tinned sardines Tuna and Salmon. On the days that they have just dry mix I increase the quantity back up to the normal daily amount for their breed/size.
They always eat with more relish when there is some sort of 'meat' in their dinner.

I feed Tinned chappie to my 40kg dog and she gets 2 x 825g tins a day with mixer added. She is a perfect weight according to the vet.

I usually mix frozen blocks with my boys complete, if we are away then I use either nature diet or tins of fish. Im sure there is nothing wrong with tinned food if it suits your dog, the few times I have fed I find it tends to come out looking and smelling exactly how it went in

I feed canned food to my 2 sometimes mixed with their complete...1/2 a can each of co-op turkey and lamb thats the only one that agrees with them. I mostly use wainwright wet packs...i find their fine on those.
I to buy the tuna fish tins from tesco 30p a tin a bargin and they love them.

I feed burns and arden grange treats with naturediet as wet food

I feed my 3 A/G complete. If I add any moist food it would be either A/G (Lamb and Rice or Tripe) or for a bit of variation I will sometimes add the new Natures Menu canned food. I do find that their stools are better on the A/G moist rather than the Natures Menu moist food. They also have eggs once a week, sardines or pilchards a few times a week as a treat, also fruit such as bananas and apples (core and pips removed) as treats several times a week. I would recommend using a canine enzymatic toothpaste if a dog has moist food as a dog would be more prone to tarter build up. JMHO of course.
I don't think buying wet food is a waste if your dogs enjoy it,

I have always thought tinned food an expensive way to buy water as basically the ingredients are the same as in the dry.
Also the poos are awful on most tinned stuff.
> Also the poos are awful on most tinned stuff.
I think this depends on the dog. The dog I had that lived on tinned food had perfectly formed, firm poops, whenever I tried him on complete food his poop would get 'floppy'. A couple of the big-named tinned food would give him the runs (winalot, pedigree) :(

My rescue came home with tins of Pedigree and his poos were bright orange

I looked at the ingredients and it contained caramel! After a few days on a good dry food they were normal.

Caramel!!!!
I've had dogs when I was growing up that really did well on pedigree tins, but after seeing the really drastic effect it had on my rescue dog I couldn't bring myself to ever use it again, even as an 'emergency' food.
(I'm not having a go at anybody who feeds pedigree)

I still have a large tin I keep meaning to put in the donations bin at PAH.The caramel is used as a colouring apparently,I assumed that's what it did to his poo

If we see bright orange poo when we're out my son always says they must feed that horrid orange food!(as well as not picking up the results!)

I feed my 1 yr old WSS a tin of Butchers mixed with a soup ladle of a good lamb and rice complete food after he gets his morning walk, then in the evening he gets a block of Prize Choice tripe, rabbit or liver mix again with a soup ladle of complete food. He is pretty active and has always been light, so this has helped to get him looking more like a WSS instead of a furry stick insect. He hates the dry food too, and goes to some lengths to pick it out of the Butchers or PC, but I notice that once he's exhausted sharing supper treats with the rest of us he quite often forces himself to finish off whatever is left in the bowl.
i feed my lot clinivet (dry) and mix in natures diet in one of there meals

We just changed Fudge's food from (sorry if you feed yours on this) pedigree tinned (yuck!!) onto purina he was on the pedigree from coming out of hospital and over a week we slowly introduced the kibble, the tinned made him have a lot of gas (double yuck!!) plus it has never been our choice of food, Bo has allways had the kibble along with 2 or 3 portions of fruit and veg with her meal and has thrived on it.
