Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / WHEN TO MATE
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 28.10.08 17:42 UTC
I had a lady ask me today when a dog should be bred from, she has a stud all set up she thinks its from day 12 of swelling the stud owner says 12 days from bleeding as there is a week difference she has asked me, but I don't feel experienced enough to say.  My bitches have swollen and bled from say day not a week in between.  Can anyone advise me?

Thanks

Linda

You usually count the days from the first day of bleeding, but just as 'the average bitch' has seasons every 6 months, it's only 'the average bitch' who's ready for mating on day 12. Some are ready earlier, some are ready later. My last bitch never stood earlier than day 13 (successful mating resulting in a litter); for her second litter she wasn't ready till day 18 (successful mating resulting in a litter).

The lady should be guided by her bitch. When she's flagging her tail she's probably ready.

JG is right. It can vary from 3 days to 23 days! And the same bitch isn't necessarily the same with each season either. I always wait for the bitch to flag, then drop everything and travel to the stud.

I have females that are ready to be mated on different days each season, i always blood test my females as we travel to Europe to the stud dogs, we have only ever missed with 1 female, (a maiden female and only was allowed the 1 mating)

Good luck with your mating x

Have to agree with JG.  A bitch is ready for mating ideally just after she has ovulated,a and this varies from bitch to bitch and even season to season in the same bitches.

I have just had a bitch mated and she went to stay with the stud dog on day 12, the male on first meeting was flirtatious she negative, but day 16 they were like Derby and Joan showing no inclination to mate.

Stud owner took her for a premate blood test that showed she was only imminent for ovulation on day 16 and was actually mated days 18 to 20.

I counted from the first day I had colour using the tissue test, so it could be had I just waited to see spotting on floor I woudl have not seen any for another day or two making the mating days 16 to 18.

In my breed I have never had a fertile mating before day 14.

Just to say many of my girls have not flagged obviously, only seeming to do this once more experienced for later litters.

So true.  One of my girls didn't stand until day 18, only the one mating, but healthy pregnancy and litter.  Two years later she threw herself at a male on day 8!  Successful litter.  So no comparison in the same bitch.

To know for sure, you could do progresterone testing, to know when ovulation is going to occur.  I have to do that for my one bitch, who has silent heats.  It gets expensive, but you are more likely going to know the exact time a bitch should be bred.

Hi there I am studding my staffie dog, and we found a perfect match for him, and the bitch is in the correct time of heat for us to do so, we got together so the dogs could mate and we waited for hours and nothing happened, I mean he tried mounting the bitch and even got himself inside a few times, but they fowled to turn and lock, does this mean that the bitch is not ready yet or is there something wrong with my male dog??

It sounds from your post as if you have absolutely no idea what you are doing with regard to mating dogs. DON'T DO IT!!! :-(
