HELP!!!

Right my boyfriends mum has already bought me presents for christmas... does anyone have any good ideas that i could buy for her... i havent the foggiest what to get her and even tho i get on really well with her etc i still dont have a clue!!

Just some ideas would be good, because i could then maybe change them to suit her... if that makes sense!!

xx :)

How old is she?  What are her hobbies?  Has she got loads of money?  What are her interests?  :)
- By Snoop Date 28.10.08 13:52 UTC
My MIL is very difficult to buy for. I've bought her Julie Walter's autobiography this year. I might buy her either Mama Mia on DVD or the Abba Gold CD as well.
Hope that is of some use to you :-)

Not sure on age, around 52? Think thats about right, she did have a birthday, but i have forgotton!! OOPS!
Getting facebooked off her head is a big hobby ha ha, and the internet and computer games, she loves them, loves mario and old computer games such as that, but not sure if she would like a computer/computer games if that makes sense, such as a nintendo, as i left mine at his/hers and she doesnt play it so...

Walking is something she loves, she isnt loaded either no...

Erm.... cant think of anything else haha, animals... well dogs and nature and things like nature programmes and history i think she is into, big history fan...
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 14:25 UTC
Ohhh good thinking!! A book!! She likes reading, very big fan... but i darent get her a book really because she has probably read it!! She bleeds the library dry every week!! LOL

CD's good idea!! She likes a lot of the old stuff, could ask my bf who her favourite artist is i guess... so thats a start, but what else i get her, its soooo hard isnt it!!

Thanks guys btw :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 14:26 UTC
Ohhh and she likes chocolate so was thinking about getting her something from Thorntons as well, maybe as a joke saying "to my mother in law" HAHA (we arent married you see!)
- By Astarte Date 28.10.08 14:47 UTC
i am blessed in this department- my OH's delightful mother who i adore told us exactly what she wanted (a new set of knives) which was really helpful :)

how about shoes or a hand bag?
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 15:08 UTC
I have asked her what she wants, i even told her to write me a list ha ha, but ohhh nooo!!
I get on so well with her but cant seem to think at all what to get her...

She loves shoes... so could get her another pair, but she probably wouldnt wear them, she has so many and doesnt really go many places to wear them if that makes sense...

Such a hard task in this instance!!
- By Whistler [gb] Date 28.10.08 15:30 UTC
One of the nicest things I got was a Boots token and I got perfume and face stuff all that I needed, funnily that was from my MIL that I love to bits. I did the pashmina bit last year in a lovely soft green and she has worn it a few times as well.
- By Carrington Date 28.10.08 15:44 UTC
Depends how much you wish to spend.

Some clues that you could adapt.

My mother in law loves lladro and I always buy her a new piece,
Coalport, Nao, Swarovski, all can start off a nice collection for her each year, if you knew she liked them of course. :-)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 15:47 UTC
I actually thought about Swarovski, but not sure when she would wear it, thats the thing... i am too practical,, i hate getting people things that are nice and they love, but they will probably never wear... get me? I would rather get people things they would use and wear... mgiht just get her a non stick frying pan LOL LMAO! Joking btw

As for cost around 15 i would say, because i am skint!! And got her dashing son to pay for!! HAHA ;-)
- By Carrington Date 28.10.08 15:51 UTC
Is she into face creams? Boots do lovely gift sets, nice makeup sets too. :-)

Do not buy the frying pan. :-D unless you say it was your O/H's idea

Perfumes????????
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:30 UTC
HAHA no i joked with her a while ago, cos her frying pan, everything like eggs and such stick to it, so i joked about buying her one for crimbo... thats where the pan came from :-P

LOL

Perfume, its a good idea, thing is, she doesnt really go anywhere to wear things like that you see... thats why i am finding her really difficult, just asked my oh on text now and he said a pony!! Great help!! ARGH
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:31 UTC
And another thing, she doesnt wear makeup unless she goes out, which is very rare and doesnt really wear creams etc... although she probably would... she just washes her face and keeps it clean and doesnt bother with products really... i know this cos we had the conversation not long ago haha :)
- By earl [fr] Date 28.10.08 16:43 UTC
Why not get her a book token?  I read loads and always love getting book tokens as presents.
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:44 UTC
Oh and BTW

Not sounding ungrateful i hope!!

I am just finding it really hard to find her anything and they are really good ideas what you are all giving me, but they are all for a normal person, its odd, she is normal of course haha, not odd or anything, but she doesnt like a lot of things i do, therefore finding it hard if that makes sense, but keep the ideas rolling!! I really do appriciate it!! :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:44 UTC
Where do you get book tokens from ?? Never heard of those before LOL

BTW i leave from work at 5pm, so if i suddenly dont reply, thats why! :)
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:52 UTC
boots no7 have a new handcream out, ive bought my mom and mil one for christmas, it should be over £10 but they are giving away £5 vouchers for no7 on anythink you buy over £5 so you end up only paying £5 for it, and it works the age spots do fade on the hands, also how about totes socks in a box they are about £6. i also love lush products fabulous bath bombs,
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 28.10.08 16:54 UTC
Which hand cream is this?? Do you have a link or a name or something?? That might be worth while, as she works in a kitchen as a supervisor, so her hands must get dry from heat and steam, and cream therefore i would of thought would be a fairly good idea? :)
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 17:04 UTC
just a sec and i will go and get it from upstairs
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 17:13 UTC
its - NO7 PROTECT & REPAIR hand cream and its says that it -Conditions and protects for younger looking hands, and it has a SPF 15, my friend uses it too and it has definatly reduces those brown age blemishes, hope that helps,
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 17:14 UTC
sorry just to add i made a mistake, you get the voucher when buying anything in boots over £10
- By Carrington Date 28.10.08 17:20 UTC

- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 17:38 UTC

http://www.booktokens.co.uk/

Those are the best kind to get as they are accepted just about everywhere ,you can get them from Bookshops too but they tend to sell their own which can only be used in that chain although alot sell the national ones too.
- By ice_queen Date 28.10.08 18:42 UTC
I have brought my boyfriends mother a candle.  It's a woodwick which crackles like a fire when lit.  My mum has them and they are really nice!

I'm also thinking of getting her some beuty products or similar!  Easiest thing I feel!
- By tessisbest [gb] Date 28.10.08 18:57 UTC
those candles sound nice, where do you get them from?
- By Snoop Date 28.10.08 19:38 UTC

> Walking is something she loves,

> She loves shoes...

How about walking boots? http://www.chasesmith.co.uk/Hiking_Walking/Hiking_Boots/sc1374/p926.aspx
They are quite pricey though. Or walking accessories like socks, a book of local walks, thermos flask, binoculars, rucksack etc.

Or what about a membership gift, like membership to the National Trust, or the Woodland Trust, or The RHS if she likes gardening.

> those candles sound nice, where do you get them from?

They do don't they! I'd be interested to know too - they sound lovely :-) Do they smell nice too?
- By Sullysmum Date 28.10.08 19:47 UTC
Does she like animals............... what about sponsering(sp) an animal in her name?
- By earl [gb] Date 28.10.08 19:53 UTC
If you get a national book token you can get it from anywhere like Waterstones, Borders, WH Smith, Ottakers, any book shop really, and it can be used in any book shop.  HTH :)

ETA:  Oops never saw Charlie's post!
- By ice_queen Date 28.10.08 20:03 UTC
I get them from an independant shop locally.  That way I can sniff the scents first, but you can get them online too at http://www.timelesstreasure.co.uk/acatalog/10oz-woodwick-candles.html  They are just lovely to sit next to.  My mum has one on the table in living room next to the sofa and it's lovely to sit with in a quite room :)
- By Snoop Date 28.10.08 20:33 UTC
Tickets to see a show at the theatre?
- By ali-t [gb] Date 28.10.08 21:35 UTC
if she is fairly skint what about something luxurious like a facial or a massage and she can pamper herself at a time that suits her
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 29.10.08 09:45 UTC
Ohhh thank you so much everyone, going to reply to everyone seperately as struggling to remember all at once who put what ha ha

> its - NO7 PROTECT & REPAIR hand cream and its says that it -Conditions and protects for younger looking hands, and it has a SPF 15,

Ohhh foot spa, and microwave cushion... sounds good!! Like that idea!! She was saying last night, well complaining really, about her aching muscles and bones etc... and she finds it hard sometimes to get off the floor... could there be a present linked to this in a way to help soothe and make them more flexable as such?! lol!!
Thank you Carrington :)
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 29.10.08 09:48 UTC

Tickets to a show hmmm not sure what show, but could be an idea, anyone got any ideas on this??

And a facial, i think she would probably enjoy that!! So might look upon that!! And a massage, just thought, that would be fab for her bones and muscles!!

Thank you so much everyone!!! :-D
- By Snoop Date 29.10.08 10:07 UTC
Those candles look lovely ice_queen - I might treat myself! :-)

As for which show to buy tickets for, it really depends what is on at your local theatre I guess. Or you can get theatre vouchers if you're unsure what she'd like to see.
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 29.10.08 11:28 UTC
I am going to take a look at the links everyone has given me on my dinner because i am going to get in trouble otherwise ha ha

i dont even know where our local theatre is haha, never been i dont think, actually, once i think.. but was a long time ago... not even sure if thats true ha ha

That website is really good, I've just bought my aunt the dragon fly bookmark, really reasonably priced too, thanks ice_queen!
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 29.10.08 14:24 UTC
My friend at work gave me a website and there is actually a shop in Manchester city centre for anyone interested in the Arndale!!

Looks so good and apparently the packaging is really good, some good gift ideas here for anyone interested

- By gembo [gb] Date 30.10.08 09:49 UTC
Yum yum yum Hotel Chocolat stuff is to die for, Rocky Road slab is my absolute fave! However I have used them for delivery as gifts & their costs are quite expensive!  Thortons are much more reasonable on delivery.  I've been pinching a few ideas from this thread, thanks yorkies4eva & everyone who has made suggestions!  What have you decided on?
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 30.10.08 10:40 UTC
I know there are some really good ideas!!!
I did notice that delivery was quite pricy, so going to pop into the shop nearer the time i think, then it eliminates delivery costs! hehe :)

I know everyone says about those slabs, they are supposed to be good, i am not a huge chocolate fan (go on all of you sound shocked) but im not, but as gifts they are fab

Not sure what i have decided on yet, going to dicuss with my boyfriend, but i think one of them would have to be something from that shop, and a book token as a second present... and do you think thats enough??

Thanks everyone :-D
- By earl [fr] Date 30.10.08 10:46 UTC
Yeah, I think that's enough.  IMO I'd rather have one (or two in this case) really nice presents than a load of rubbish.  I always tend to get the load of rubbish from certain people. :(

Happy shopping! :)
- By ice_queen Date 30.10.08 16:55 UTC
I think thast enough is it's what is in your budget!

Whats sad though is I'm sorted my boyfriends mother, but my own mothers birthday next week I don't have a clue! LOL
- By weim1 [gb] Date 30.10.08 18:47 UTC
What about a heat massager, they are great for aching bones. You can buy them in places like boots or semi chem
