Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Showing docked dogs

Can someone just clarify for me, can docked dogs be shown with the correct paperwork? I know that they can't be shown at shows where public pay entry but how many shows does this mean, apart from Crufts? And do the same rules apply to junior handling as its the handler being judged, not the dog? Sam.

For junior handling the dog must have been entered at the show so if it can't be shown then it can't be used for handling - not sure on the answer to the rest of your question.

I would think the only way a dog could be shown if it was docked now and would have paperwork is if it was docked due to damage later on in life rather than at 3 days old.

if legally docked and no paying public...then it can be shown. legally docked includes those docked at newborn stge for work. my lakelands will all be legally docked as they are from working stock and intended only for working homes :)

There are a fair few champshows that do charge the public admission.

Yes if they were docked before the law was changed you can continue to show them.

Docked dogs can be shown at any show providing the show does not charge the public to enter. A number of shows that used to charge for entry now charge for car parking so any legal docked dog can be shown at any show where the public does not pay to enter.

That is dogs docked before the ban, dogs docked and given permission to show because of damage, dogs docked because they work as well as show, imported dogs from areas where docking is still legal.

Shows that charge are not many but include Crufts, I think most county shows and championship shows now charge extra for car parks and not an entry fee and they can exhibit docked dogs. Open show have hardly ever charged the public and continue not to.

On that note, am I going mad or did Paignton not used to charge an admission fee until this year? I could have sworn it was free to get in last year but this year they were charging. Seemed very strange to me as, as you say, shows have been scrapping admission fees rather than bringing them in! I suppose it could be to do with the venue change?

Unless I'm remembering wrong :)

The cut off date (sorry) you are thinking of is 6th April 2007. Traditionally docked (working) breeds can still be docked assuming you can find a vet prepared to do this and can prove that your intention is to raise the pups to work. You need to apply in writing to the KC for permission to show a docked dog born after this date and restrictions apply in that shows that charge an entrance fee to the public are off limits. The KC will want the original vet's certificate KC registration with your application--you might have to give them a nudge to return them.

My understanding is this applies to all dogs shown in the UK irrespective of whether they have come from countries where docking is still legal.

The cut off date is different for Wales, it is the 28th of March 2007 so it also depends where the show is being held.

dogs that were docked after the legal time limit set by the KC cannot be shown at general open limit or champ shows, dogs that have also had to be docked due to medical reason after the legal time set by the KC used to be able to get a letter of permission to show, now i understand they also cannot be shown now and do not get the letter from the KC, im sure someone will correct me if im wrong (grin)

The last Gazette I read defiantly had a list of dogs given permission to show with an abbreviated tail. May have been a month or so ago but I have not read their rules have changed and it would be very unfair if it did, you can show a dog with missing teeth or toes so why not tail?
- By rachelsetters Date 25.10.08 11:27 UTC
Sadly this is correct even medically docked dogs can not be shown - irrevelant if traditionally previously docked dog or not i.e. a setter!  Which i think is crazy!
- By Nova Date 25.10.08 12:19 UTC
That is true madness and I would think will be reversed when someone bothers to think about it, a friend of mine has a wolfhound that has lost a vertebra and it is madness if it could not be shown, to be honest you would not even know.
- By rachelsetters Date 25.10.08 12:37 UTC
if it was done before the ban came in it is ok - its those after it affects - I know there was a petition somewhere regarding it.

Totally agree total madness!  and so unfair - being docked for an injury is hardly a choice is it! its totally for the welfare of the dog.

people are getting around this by whelping there litter in Ireland registering them there re registering in uk as import.
i know a few who have done this.
at a gundog show yesterday where i was stewarding, there where docked puppies in the ring.

You can still get a letter from the KC's Breed Team Specialist giving permission to show a dog docked after the relevant dates--you submit your request in writing accompanied by the original Veterinary Certificate (from the vet who carried out the docking) ad the dog's KC registration papers. I quote in part the letter I received from the Breed Team Specialist, dated 18/08/08:

"Your application has been approved in line with existing policy and having been supported by a Veterinary Certificate. You are rem9inded that your dog is only eligible to be exhibitied at shows for which the public do not pay an admittance fee."

Just be careful that you get your original documents back from the KC--it might take an extra nudge...
