That does NOT sound like a good feeding regime I'm afraid -really cheap low quality food and porridge and pasta? I'd feed a high quality complete dry food 4 times a day if I was you, personally I use James Wellbeloved puppy for my own pups. Did the breeder explain WHY she fed like this? I.e. is it something she had worked out to stop pups from growing too quickly (can be a problem in big breeds) or did she not give a reason?

Not 2 sure why she used the diet on the pups........the breeder didn't give a reason why apart from the tuna pasta once a week it helps there coat apparently........ Where do you get the James Wellbeloved food from? Any normal supermarket or is it specially ordered online?????

Hi there,

An Akita is a big breed of dog, with some very specific feeding needs, so it is very sensible to ask the question.

You should definitely be feeding him on a good quality dog food - and make sure that you get one that says it is for Puppies - Large Breed. The best bet is to go to your petshop rather than the supermarket and see what you have. Some of the best names to go for include James Wellbeloved, Burns, Nutro and Arden Grange, but there are others. People on here will give you advice, but to be honest a lot of it depends on what suits your dog (what they like and what doesn't make their poos sloppy). Just make sure that it says for Puppies - Large Breed on the label. You can put some warm water on the food at first, that might make it taste nicer for him (kind of turns into gravy).

I would say that the porridge was okay when he was a baby, buy now he really needs to be on proper Large Breed Puppy food to help his bones to grow. The tuna and pasta won't do him any harm as a nice treat.

Hope everything else is going well. Have you got him enrolled in any puppy training classes? This is essential for such a big and powerful dog (well, for all dogs, but especially big ones!)

When I collected my Akita the breeder fed her on Royal Canin.  I gradually swapped my girl over to Arden Grange Puppy/Junior and she did really well on it.  She is now 3 1/2.
I'm not sure if I read this wrong but is your male Akita 15 weeks and not been out yet???  If so get him out and about ASAP, carrying him if you have to.  Akita's need as much socialisation from an early age as possible.  Get him used to people, cars, dogs, cats etc on an everyday basis.
Also book him into puppy training classes as soon as you can, make sure these are Akita friendly as alot of trainers do not like Akita's in their classes.

Good advice staff I read the post that way too. Is there an akita breed club advice from them maybe useful too spark especially if he is you first dog or first of this breed. They are lovely dogs although I have never owned one I should think they need firm and careful handling  t bringout the best in them.

Why is this pup only just starting his inoculations?

Any pup sold over 12 weeks of age should have completed their primary vaccination course.

What sort of 'breeder' does he come from???? :(

hi sparkz121.
It seems you didint get your akita from a repertable breeder as you should of been given a detailed puppy pack which should of included food, feeding guide, vaccination details etc (guess its to late to worry about that now). It is very important you change him onto a good quality diet, this will effect his joints and growing bones. I feed my akita and my litter on purina pro plan. This food was recomended by the breeder of my bitch and i know lots of akita owners who feed this diet. I also feed natures diet and several times a week i supplement the natures diet for a raw egg or tin of oily sardines. I also give veg and fruit. You will need to change his food gradually to mimimise an upset tummy. I also recommend a trip to the vet to sort out his vaccinations and discuss a worming regime as it is unlikely he has been wormed properley. There is a lot of good books written by akita people i could recommend if you want. Please feel free to email me and i will give you any more advice i can (am not an expect but try hard with my akitas to ensure they have a good diet/lifestyle). Also please consider a training/socialisation class. The akita is a wonderful trainable, breed but they need early socialisation and to learn the rules.I do ring craft and agility and i can proudly say my girl has a 100% recall. She loves to swin too! The effort you put in now will determine wether you have a wonderful obident companion or a deliquent problematic dog! (off my soap box now) good luck.
