Topic Dog Boards / Health / haemorrhaging yorkie, any ideas?
- By wonkydog [gb] Date 23.10.08 11:55 UTC
I was woken this morning by my 11 month old yorkshire terrier loosing large amounts of blood from his penis! Couldn't believe the amount of blood that came from a small dog. Whilst on the phone to the emergency vet she was asking me to examine him so she had a rough idea but the blood was literally spraying out in bursts from the end of his willy, couldn't believe it. When I got him to the surgery the vet and I discovered the blood was coming from a dark red ulcer looking thing just next to his urethra. The vet said that she needed to give him an anaesthetic to look properly because she couldn't see what it was exactly or what had caused it. Just looking quickly she guessed that it may be that a hair had got wrapped round the end of his willy and caused a blood blister????? Whilst he's under she's going to castrate him too as he had a retained testicle which should have come down by now, I was going to have him castrated after Christmas so killing two birds with one stone. Has anyone had this happen to one of their dogs or heard of this? I'll find out later and post the results but I'm walking round my house in a trance with worry and thought I would ask if anyone else has heard of this or similar.

Hoping everything is ok with your dog. Our dog is in the vets with bleeding from the rectum. See the link on anything else other than parvo on the health pages.

I also know how your feeling with walking round in a trance, i am supposed to be going to work shortly, just can't face it now i know our dog is worse than last night.

Ahh bless, poor thing, no never in 30 odd years of owning males had this.  Give him a hug from me tonight!

Poor chap. It must have been pretty scary for you, not to mention sore for the little fella. Hope everything is well, and I guess there's a lesson there that we should keep hair "down there" trimmed in future.

Hope everything goes well for the boy.

Thank you for your kind comments, I picked him up this evening and he has a prolapse penis! its a rare condition but when it does happen it's usually bull dogs not yorkies! I have to take him back 8.30am tomorrow. When I collected him this eve he got excited to see me and it popped out again and started haemorrhaging again! Absolute nightmare and I have to say I was pathetic but the staff were lovely and made me a cup of tea, bless. I have to keep him quiet tonight and he can't get excited at all, so trying to keep my other two dogs quiet too. If it's still popping out in the morning then the vet will put a couple of temp stitches in it when she sees him. What a nightmare today has been!

Poor little chap, sounds so awful and scarey for you.  Sounds like it's pretty easy to fix though, just a couple of stitches.  Hope he gets better soon :)

Well, he didn't haemorrhage in the night but did at 7.30 this morning so he's having a pursestring put in for the weekend. The main thing that's concerning me now is that he's having it done under sedation rather than another general anaesthetic as the vet didn't want him to have another one. If it pops out again/bleeds on Monday when she takes it out then he has to see a tissue specialist. I'm glad I bought him home for the night because he had a lovely fish and potato dinner, cuddled all night and I could keep an eye on him as he kept trying to lick the prolapse and the stitches from the castration all night, he could still reach them even though he had a buster collar on! so I don't know what would have happened if he had stayed in and been able to lick himself all night??? And they say that having a dog is a good stress reliever!!!!! lol

Crikey. That poor little bloke. I'm having to cross my legs just reading about it! :-(

Hope your wee fella gets better soon.

I had a 10 month old Papillon with a similar condition (prolapsed prepuse) where the penis kept falling out of the sheath, he was treated at the vet school in Glasgow.  They placed a balloon under the abdomen in front of the penis and stretched the skin over a period of three weeks. They used the extra skin to reconstruct the sheath so it could accomodate the penis with no more problems.
Hamilton was neuterd two months later and went on to lead a normal healthy life with no further porblems.

Thanks Abbeypap, I passed that info to my vet when I picked him up earlier as she has never dealt with this condition before. She was very interested in that proceedure. Do you know if Hamilton did something, i.e injury etc to cause it or do you know if it's just one of those things that happen? I'm just miffed as to how/why it happened, he started haemorrhaging at 5am approx yesterday whilst asleep so can't work out why it started happening.
My vet has put in a tiny tube and sewn the skin around it just to get him through the weekend. She is hoping she'll take it off Monday morning and all will be ok and everything will stay in place, but she has said that any more bleeding or complications then he's off to a tissue specialist.

Hi,

Hamilton attended his very first show at Blackpool champ show where he would not settle on the table for the judge.  It was two days after that his penis became swollen and remained exposed for the best part of a day and night till I got him to the vet.  They took him in and catheterised (sp) him and cleaned him up, the penis was very swollen, tender and the tissue had become infected.  I collected him that afternoon and took him straight to Glasgow vet school where he spent the next 3 - 4 weeks.  Initally we were given two options, one was to have him pts the other was to amputate part of the penis.  Neither of these options thrilled me to say the least.

Later in the evening I was watching a programme about people who had been badly burned and how they treated them and one of these treatments was to use a balloon under good skin to create more skin for doing skin grafts.  For some reason it struck me it could work for Hamilton as his problem seemed to be the lack of excess skin.

I spoke to his consultant the next day and they said they would give it a try and it worked.  So no need for Hamilton to be pts or have any kind of partial amputation.

I hope your dog gets through this without any further intervention, but if you need any further help I can find out for  you who would be the person to speak to at Glasgow if the chap who did the work is still there or if not, they might still have his case file still around.

Regards
Joan

Edited to add :- Hamilton did not suffer any trauma to his undercarriage that might have caused it.  It just appears to be one of those things.   J

Hope your boy is doing better. Its hard seeing your dog in this way.
I can only hope as you said that having him home has helped and more than likely him.

Lets hope that something can done for him sooner rather than later.

My thoughts are with you and your boy x

How has your boy been over the weekend?

Let us know how he gets on at the vet on Monday.
Hope all goes well.

Good news (so far!) Paddy had his temp stitches removed this morning and all seems to be well so far. My vet is happy and confident that the stitches over the weekend have held and 'fused' everything back in place. What a weekend it was, my two sons and I took it in turns to sleep as he really wasn't happy wearing a buster collar and he had to be watched constantly as he will pick at his stitches, his castration stitches too.
I really hope that this will be an end to it and everything will go back to normal. Thank you Abbeypap for explaining all about your little dog and similar circumstances hopefully I'll not need the details you've offered, fingers crossed XX

Hi, so sorry to hear about your poor dog....shame your Vet didn't ring a University Animal Hospital for help in the first place! considering she hadn't dealt with it before! Never mind, I hope he's ok now and his widdling red pee has finished poor lamb!

Have you told his breeders about it? To my mind it's generally a genetic birth defect, similar to testicular problems, a slightly misarranged path for the penis and sheath. Maybe if you rang the breeder they might know of others in the litter or previous problems? But even if there's no problems they should be told about it anyway? There are other causes, some can be from infection or an over attentive doggy that licks and licks away at himself, causing an irritation, but I rather feel it's genetic. What does your Vet say about the cause?

Anyways, whatever the cause, let's hope he recovers well and has no further problems. Take care, Dawn
