Topic Dog Boards / Showing / How many benched shows in UK?
- By Julie Hill [gb] Date 19.10.08 23:20 UTC
Does anybody know how many benched show there are annually in the UK?

A rough figure will do, but I just was intrigued by this "There are only six benched shows held annually in the United States." which I found at this site http://www.nationaldogshow.com/judging.asp

Just curious really, becuase there are lots in the UK aren't there?

Thanks,

Julie

UK General Championship shows are much larger than US shows.

Think the answer is all general breed championship shows and possibly a few others, but as Brainless has said there is no comparison in the numbers at shows in the USA and those attending championship shows in the UK.

showing newfs, a bench is important as last weekdend we did the newfie champ show which was not benched and it was hell.
dozens of dogs all bring held on lead or in crates ( which take up loads of room as you can imagine ).
you couldnt get round the hall with more then one dog at a time and that was a stuggle what with people standing ringside etc.
I have often wondered if benches could be done away with to save money but now i know it would be awful from my point of view.

Thanks for all responses. I've only (so far) been to outdoor unbenched shows so there was plenty of room and it wasn't an issue.

Do you mean there are fewer benched shows in USA because there are fewer people who would be interested in attending?

I have been to a few Agricultural shows eg Royal Cornwall Show and they are benched.Which seems a waste if the weather is good as all the rings are out side and lots of room. But don't supose we can rely on the British Summer :-)

I and I think the others meant that there are far fewer dogs entered into the shows in the USA so there would not be the problem that a few thousand dogs would need to be hand held or caged and the amount of space required to accommodate them.

Also as an exhibitor who takes more than one dog single handed.

A general championship show in UK will have around ten thousand dogs entered over 3 or four days.

The number of dogs, and therefore exhibitors and spectators and a US show will be much smaller, we have bigger shows in a smaller geographical area, in the USA they have a larger number of much smaller shows in a huge geographical area.
