hi everyone,
I am thinking about getting a pup with the intention of showing it in about two years time.
Now i know that may sound a long way away but (a) i want to decide what breed I want, (there are a couple at the mo) and (b) I have absolutely no knowledge of ringcraft, rules around showing, etc etc
I am wondering if there are any good books on showing that would be of assistance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Theresa

Hi Theresa,
I would suggest trying Amazon.co.uk but make sure it isn't an American book there is one listed if you search under showing dogs by Peggy Grayson which looks good but I would suggest emailing Amazon first and checking if it is UK or American. Don't by any TFH as they are American and also only about 1/3 of the book relates to specific breed the rest is the same in every book.
Also look for a ringcraft class locally and go along, I don't feel I am qualified to give much advice although I have been showing for 20 years on and off I much prefer my obedience, but maybe as a very old novice I can give some advice.

Theresa, go to as many shows as you can, include Championship shows inc. Crufts. This will help you decide which breed you want to show and live with.
When you have sorted the breed, watch that breed carefully at shows and see which of the dogs you like best, chose about 3. Then speak to their owners, and if they breed see about a visit to see their stock, if you like what you see then put your name on their waiting list. Make it know around the ring that you will be looking for a puppy to show, you will soon get a feel for a breeder that you know will help you get started and show you the ropes. But to start with try to speak with two or three breeders, otherwise you may have to wait a long while for a show puppy.
Try getting a book that show all the breeds that are shown and read about them, make sure that the book applies to the country where you will be showing. When you have short listed a few, you can get books on those breeds you are specialy interested in. Start taking one of the dog papers, and ask around, or on here, for a ring craft class and go along, chat & watch, they wont mind that you have no dog, you will learn a lot & make new friends.

Noug, try your local library too, I read up on a lot of books before I started showing. They may be oldish, but the basics are still the same (i think !!).
Also try the internet, there maybe some sites set up for tips on training and showing etc.
I started off but going to ringcraft, and then doing some exemption shows, then open shows, and now we hit the big scene once in a while and go to the champ shows too !! :D

Because I did not know any better, I chose for my first show with my first puppy a Championship show, went into the ring terrified and won second in puppy, did not even realise that it qualified her for Crufts. they told me that at ringcraft. Talk about where fools rush in. Ja:)kie

Jackie,
Sounds like the best way 2 feet right in.. if you fall you get up again.
You have done well from it and are very knowledgable now.

Blimey Jackie, talk about taking the bull by the horns !!! Im still petrified when I go to champ shows !! I cant get over for that many unfortunately, I would love to do more than the 2 or 3 each year...but alas holiday and expense prevail !!!! :(
Maybe I should come and live in the UK !!!!
