I know there has been a thread from someone else but i have some different questions

sold a puppy he is now 3 months.. he is a lab... his testicles apparently havn't dropped yet, when do they usually drop? Owner is thinking about entering an open show for january but if they havn't dropped yet can he not go in the ring? thanks

Hiya

One of my boys testicles didnt drop till he was about 5mnths, and a friend of mine, her dogs didnt arrive fully till he was 11mnths! She still took him in the ring however and he won a couple of classes, sometimes they are late to drop, so dont panic and yes i would still enter him .

I agree with PB - don't panic yet. Some will drop a little later than others - and for their size gundogs seem to be surprisingly unendowed until they reach puberty so they can be harder to find. :-D If they haven't dropped by the time of showing though he will be penalised in the ring - every standard says "all dogs should have two normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum" or words to that effect - can't remember if that's the exact wording. If that's any help.

yeh, the latest date to enter them is mid november so she will wait until then before she applies for the show.. see if they've dropped :)

Some can take up to a year- one of my breeders pups took a full year- pretty long- I had one take 6 months- I wouldn't panic at just 3 months.

I recently had a new pup owner contact me because the pup she had bought from me had been for his health check and jabs.  The vet scared her, saying that the testicles weren't down, and she should consider castration!  In a pup!  Give me a break, my last boy was 6 months before they were down.  I had one BC boy that was 11 months before the event.

Give it time :-) A good judge will understand that a puppy might be anxious in the ring, and young males can withdraw their bits if worried  :-) I would get your friend to enter the show and wait and see, but leave well alone They will come down in time if they are there. The more you play with them the more he will withdraw, causing more anxiety.

Tell her to stop checking!

Our English Setter pup has only one fully descended and we've been told to keep a check but nothing to worry about yet.

My understanding is that by the time the pup is 1 year old he should have both testicles descended to be able to continue to show him under show rules. My own dog, a WSS, is in this unfortunate position--he was inspected by two vets at an early age and found each time to both testicles descended, but at some point between this and a show at age 9 1/2 months he was found to be missing a testicle. As of his first birthday next week he will not be shown again. We have been told to give him until 18 months "to see what happens" before deciding whether surgical intervention will be required. I'm told it can take that long for his breed to fully mature.

Interestingly I spoke to my vet neighbour about his umbilical hernia and the missing testicle--which I noticed shortly after I brought him home from the breeder--and the vet says these two conditions are very often linked.

hmm, interesting

none of our pups had an ambilical hernia

so would a judge be sympathetic to a 6 month old with out any apparent testicles?

My Boy who is now 2 was slow with his, i got some help from an homeopathic pharmacy,
They sent me some soft pill's that he had to take for a couple of weeks they said if it was going to come down these would help and if not they would do the dog no harm.
he was 6 months at the time, they where down with in 2/3 weeks don't know if it was the pills or nature.

Our wheaten terrier boy is fourteen weeks old with one testicle down and one up. Our vet said not to worry, but if the second isn't down by about nine months old then he may require surgery to remove it as a retained testicle runs the risk of turning cancerous. Obviously this would be much more serious than whether or not he could be shown.

I'm sure the attitude taken by the judge will depend on breed and personal conviction. I would be concerned if a pup did not have two descended at the age of 6 months, I may place but not high in the line and I may speak to the owner, although I know they can descend as late as 18 months, late descending testis can't be a good thing and nothing should be done to encourage the breeding from animals that pass on this trait.

Interested in the homeopathic remedy--I noticed there were websites advertising remeies for human use and had in mind asking about their use for dogs. Can you say where you got this remedy and what it was called?

I got it from helios just told them the problem,
They sent what was needed, sorry cannot remember the name.
They are very good and explain everything.

sorry,, just seen this..

I would enter the show.. no need to panic yet..

I had a yellow boy a few years ago.. destined for the showring.. but they didnt appear.. each week at ringcraft.. gone over.. and as usual... nothing.. (i didnt keep checking, it was only at ringcraft).. lo and behold.. a week before his 1st show.. aged 6months 2day.. during his usual going over at ringcraft.. the trainer stood up and bellowed.. Yay.. Bailey has B**ls :-D

Plenty of time yet ;-)

The more you play with them the more he will withdraw, causing more anxiety.

This made me chuckle, all this talk of playing with puppy balls PMSL :)

Turbos balls have been descended and hanging proud for a while now and he is only 7 months lol :)
