We have just brought a 7 month old chocolate labrador, who is lovely with a great personality. We brought him a couple of weeks ago and he has settled in so quickly and loves the beach and running in the sea. By some research we believe he has had a couple of homes previously (why do people buy puppies then let them go when they get too much!!??), we brought him from a couple who said their son was allergic to dogs??????? The only trouble we have is that he still mouths at 7 months when playing and this can hurt. Because they had not trained him before he has obviously been allowed to get away with this. We have started dog training and they have said to scream OUCH! and if he still does it lock him in his room as they hate being on their own, but we get chewed having to drag him along as he rolls on his back. Are there any other options to stop this mouthing??? Labs are very bright so I am so 7 months is not too old to get him trained and learn that mouthing is not nice... Any advice greatly recieved!!

Hi Guest,

I am not an expert on training but have had a few dogs so I can only base my comments on my own experience.

I have found that the loud "ouch" at the top of you voice works. We even do the "head down upset look" with our dogs. The other is Loud stern NO. It doesn't work over night but after a few times it does. I have then had not further problems with any of my dogs. These methods have worked for both larger working dogs and smaller terriers. It may just take a bit longer as the dog is a bit older than when you would have normally got him as a pup but keep it up and it will come right. The dog needs to find it's place. 2 previous homes what a shame. Good luck let us know how it goes.

Pam
