Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dane barking when walked!!
- By tripie [gb] Date 11.10.08 11:19 UTC
I walk my 7 dogs together, 3 danes, 3 BT's and a Rottie, one of my Danes who is 17months barks permantly going down the field, right next to me, and if I tell her to shut up or raise my voice at her, she still carries on, I know its some form of excitment, so my only way is to walk her on the lead or muzzle her!
Its very annoying, as the others carry on running around the field, not bothering with Kenya who bark bark all the way down, but she doesnt bark on the way back up the field!
Does anybody have any ideas way she does this, and suggestions on how to stop it, except bringing Caeser over !!
I dont want to walk her on her own, as I have always walked them as a pack, and she loves the free running.

Thanks
Fiona

But, that is exactly what you need to do to solve this problem she is an adolescent she is conveying her excitment not just to you but also to the pack!

My mother's youngest Cocker (a show) was very yappy once she reached adolescence, it was quickly solved by me taking her out away from the pack, and the moment she yapped she was put on lead, asked to sit! and told shhhh..... when she stopped she was released, if she started again she was told shhhh...... if she stopped she did not go back on lead.  You can back up shhhh or quiet with a treat also if your pup is food orientated, it may take one day, two or two weeks, but the message will get across. My mothers Cocker took only 2 days to learn. The walk took twice as long to complete with all the stopping and starting mind, and if all else fails stick a ball in her mouth. :-D

If you shout she will think you are joining in with her and shouting commands also has the same effect, which is why I prefer Shhhh....

Once she is obeying you bring her back into walking with the pack, but you will need to keep seperating her for any other behavioural issues, she will need one to one. :-)

wow! how do you walk all those together?

Your Dane sounds like one of my boys, as soon as he knows we are going out, he starts to bark frantically, this is until his lead is on then he stops , if I keep him off the lead he jumps up and down and woujld barkall the way down the lane to the field.
Its a really annoying habit, and one he has had for over 3yrs now, so i doubt ill ever get him out of it, i dont shout back as like the last poster says it just encourages them, it is definately excitement nothing else.

I tried a remote spray collar once but he didnt even sense it as he was too busy jumping and barking, this is the only bad habit my boy has so just have to put up with it, they all have their bad points.

Bet your dane looks dead funny barking though, i havent seen a giddy dane! bless her

Just wondered - obviously it's something you want to try to stop as you have posted to ask but - does it actually bother anyone? Is it disturbing neighbours or what have you? If it doesn't cause anyone a problem, and doesn't worry you - you could just let her bark. :-D

If you do want to stop her - and I am no expert, so don't take my word as gospel :-D - it sounds like excitement. I don't know if you already have - but it might be worth teaching 'speak' and 'quiet' on cue so you can turn the barking on and off - starting in the house then the garden etc before working up to the most exciting place. Clicker training worked brill for training 'talk' and 'quiet' to my GSP.And obviously where it's exciting - you'd have to start off with whatever was her favourite thing as reward for doing what you had asked etc - piece of liver, game of tuggy (does anyone play tuggy with a Great Dane and if so do they always end up on their faces? :-D ), going to play with other dog, whatever it is. :-)

Am I making sense? Brain is permanently mush at the moment.
