Not sure if this comes under the feeding section, i feed my little yorkie hard food mixed with some doggi meat

When i go to take him for a walk at night, he does one poo, which is hard and normal! But as we carry on walking, suddenly he goes all runny and it goes messy and he is squlching it out and i dont understand why it does this.. i have been thinking maybe its because he gets all excited and it jumbles up inside him... but how would i stop this and make it hard... like i said, he does one hard initial one... so dont really understand...

Over excitement can make them 'go' again - perhaps that's all your dog is suffering from.  Is this the only times when he passes soft stools?  Or does it continue throughout the day?

Can be diet, can be stress - like say if you have a dog that gets hyped up and agitated, can be bugs etc... Is it something he's always done?

Hi, Floyd is exactly the same as yours when we are out, first couple of poohs they are fine, in fact you have to watch out and sometimes duck, as when he is finished and does the back scrat (as I call it) and he can catch one of them nuggets on the end of his foot and it goes flying....  Then any other poohs after those just get runnier and runnier, and I think this is all down to excitement, which is the same when I bring him into work with me.

Hi... my girl does the same, this is my theory... so please don't take as gospel!

The first poo is normal as it has had time to sit around/process... much like morning poo's are normally firm, where afternoon ones might be a bit looser. The second/third/fourth that aren't so firm, I think are due to the dog being active and their body then recognising it needs to expel anything in the stomach/bowels, even if it isn't fully processed. I liken it to a human who decides to go to the gym and doesn't want to feel uncomfortable 'holding anything in' if you get what I mean. Luckily for the dogs they can just go when and where they want (more so lucky that humans don't do this!!!) I hope this makes sense... I have had a long day and am probably talking gibberish :-P

What lovely topics we talk about "POOH" but yes I agree with your theory.

hahaha this makes me laugh. my dog sometimes does what i call an "excitement" poo. his first poo of the walk is fine, small ish, firm etc but if hes off lead playing with other dogs and gets a bit manic, he will sometimes do another poo, this one not as formed and slightly soppy. yuck!

He always has done this i guess, and its never really bothered me... until now i am fed up of getting back from my walk and having to wash his whole bum area and legs because its gone down his coat (with him being a long coated yorkie you can imagine the state!!)

Is there nothing which can firm it, even though as always his poo is always firm to begin with, but gets messier as the walk goes on?

Its strange isnt it, imagine if us humans got like that when we went for a walk, we would be in trouble :-P  !!!

Ohhh and Teri... yes this is the only time he passes them soft... its not even a stool though, just brown water lol

And only EVER when he goes on a walk, i mean why does he still get so excited, he is 5 years old now!! lol!!

Have you thought about changing your boys food ? I'm not saying its the reason for his loose poos but it might help ? Do you give him any treats or anything ? We can feed our Malamute almost anything left over from our meals and she doesn't ever get the runs, but if I ever give her tinned dog food she gets awful dire rear (don't know how to spell the proper word!)

Well i do change his hard food quite a lot, because i like to try different things and see which works best... i do tend to use the same meat though to mix with his dry food... if i dont use meat, he wont eat his hard food alone... weird isnt it... i know he would eat it if hungry, but i like to make it tasty for him, i dont like eating dry food either so why make my sparky... you think it could be the wet meat??

Brown water sounds a bit excessive - I would be looking at what he is fed on - because what suits one doesn't always suit another - and a faeces sample at the vet.

Tree Barks Powder from Dorwest is meant to help improve digestion of food etc - it has slippery elm in it - and sometimes probiotics can help too.

I'm no expert but I wonder if changing his hard food too much might upset him.
I reckon too much variety, too much rich food and too much food in general can cause the trots, mind you it only takes small amounts of other stuff to give the squitters too. Like a small amount of sea water or a small amount of sheep sh*t or a small amount of Vienna's Perfect Pussy Cat Pate. Hope you manage to get it sorted, you could always tell Sparky you're fed up of having to wash his trouser fur and he's going to get a 'bone head' hair cut if he doesn't behave, mind you that might frighten the sh*t out of him and you're back to where you started;)

Maybe its because when mum gets his dog food, she does get different ones, maybe it is that... not sure..

Ill probably have to look on settling with one specific dog food maybe...
