Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My dog is regressing!! Help!

Hi there, I've not posted here before so apologies now for any etiquette faux pas!

I had two Cavaliers, one boy who is 2 years and one girl of 18 months. My boy is neutered and my girl is about to be spayed at the end of the month (she's had two seasons, I deliberately didn't want to spay her until she'd had one and the second one caught me by surprise unfortunately). In the past couple of weeks my boy dog has started to try and mount her and there are a number of little dominance tit for tat things going on, usually initiated by my girl dog and I'm reasonably sure his behaviour is more asserting himself than a sexual thing.

They adore each other and there is no malice but they do seem to be getting a bit out of hand sometimes. He's normally very good with her and has shown no interest in her when she has been in season and I wondered if this was due to her being a bit more of a teenager and a handful. She's also started to wee in the house every two to three days in the last month, I've had her checked for any water infection and she's fine so I can only assume its a behavioural thing.

They don't have the run of the house (beds, sofa's etc) so there aren't any boundary issues, they aren't left alone that often as I work from home so I am wondering if this is normal behaviour for a dog of her age, whether its to do with her being between seasons (3 months since her last one) and what I can do to help them both be happier?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The mounting, when the female in season is more of a sexual thing.  Even though your male is neutered, he still can mount, tie, etc.  Just you wont have any puppies resulting.
If she wasnt in season, yes, it would be more of a dominance thing.  Although, some males think that every time there is a female around, she is there to breed.  (Regardless of whether the bitch is in season or not).

whether its to do with her being between seasons (3 months since her last one)

I would be a tad concerned about the seasons being that close together.  Normally, seasons are every 5-8 months apart, but it isnt unheard of for them to be a year apart.  I have never heard of a bitch having a season only 3 months after her last one.  But thats only my experience, so I am not saying that it isnt able to happen quite normally.

She's also started to wee in the house every two to three days in the last month, I've had her checked for any water infection and she's fine so I can only assume its a behavioural thing.

If you have had her checked for UTIs and such, then I would suggest it be the cause of her being in season.  Some bitches, become very dirty before, during and after their seasons.

HTH

Kind Regards

Crespin

I would say that this is quite normal behaviour. Even though he is nuetered he will still feel the urge to mate. A bitches first season doesn't tend to be as 'smelly' to dogs as their following ones. As to her weeing it is also normal (unfortunately ;-) ) Especially around a bitches season. Once she has been neutered things should go back to normal, unless there is an underlying problem. Having her checked out by your vet was going to be my next piece of advice, but as you've already gone that way there isn't much I can think of just now. :-)

Crespin, I have had a bitch that was inclined to have very short seasons. It does tend to be a hormonal thing and can be quite common. I solved the problem by having my bitch spayed. She only had one litter, and only had one puppy in that litter. Maybe the 2 were connected? I have heard that a bitch that has such short seasons does not actually ovulate, which is why she comes in again so quickly. Just thought you'd like to know :-D

In Response to LindyLou:

Thanks for your comment.  I have never heard of it being that short in between, and it caught me off guard.  All my bitches are the 6 months, apart from the one, who is yearly.
