My 9 week old pup is currently hospitalised with parvovirus i have read alot about it via the net and everything that has been posted on this site, is there a statistical survial rate or does it just depend on your pups, age, strength and the speed of diagnosis?
- By Schip Date 05.10.08 22:08 UTC
It really does depend on age, health, natural immunity etc as to how your puppy will far I'm afraid, has he/she had her first vaccine and if so how quickly after did the Parvo develop?

Hi thanks for your response, we got Fudge from battersea, and his approx age on fri 3rd was 9weeks, he had his first jab 18th sept, was due a second jab on 2nd oct but our vet said he was to young and needed to be 10 weeks not that this would of helped him, as he became ill the following day. he was back at our vets but it was just thought to have been nausea brought on by a course of antibiotics that battersea gave us just as a precaution as he had suffered with kennel cough whilst in the dogs home.
- By K5Kees Date 07.10.08 08:38 UTC
Have you notified the dogs home that the pup has parvo? I have to say I am suprised that they rehomed such a young pup that is still recovering from KC. It could be that his immune system was still run down from KC and that probably made him more susceptable to the parvo.

Keeping all fingers crossed for your little one.

We have informed the dogs home asap. he had the snuffles, more so when sleeping sounded like a snore but his vet check there was fine, so they allowed him to come home. we are hopefully being allowed to go and see him today, we only got him on the 28th sept but he already is as is our other dog ( who i have been assured shouldn't be affected as she is 5 years old but im still keeping a close eye on) a huge part of our lives. Thank you all so much for your thoughts xxx

Just thought i'd update on Fudge, went to see him yesterday and despite all his tubes, he looks relatively good. Heard again from the vets this morning and his white blood cell count was up, he even managed to stand up and move towards the vets etc when they went to do his hourly obs, he showed some interest in food bless him, i hope he carries on with his fight, as he seems like a tough cookie,he already has gone through so much, visiting him again today. xxxx Still preying for you Fudge xx

Saw Fudge yesterday didn't come away feeling as positive, he had been vomiting again and his diarrhea (soz) was really bad. Our poor little boy was also swollen from the fluids he has been on, he needed a little jumper on as his temp had also dropped still managed to give him some well deserved cuddles. Today when we saw Fudge he had perked up some what and he looks more alert, the swelling has come down abit and he managed to eat some chicken he gave me some beautiful kisses, still preying he gets better and stronger every day our dear little Fudgexx

Hi Diane
Just to say sending lots of healing love to Fudge, and to let you know some positive news, my Jasper bless him developed parvo at 4 months, thou a little older than Fudge he survived, and lived to a ripe old age of 15, and thou he did suffer with bad bouts of tummy upsets throu his life, caused by his tummy being inflamed, and i think made sensitive by the parvo, he made a full recovery. So i hope this is positive news for you, and i do hope that Fudge makes a full recovery.

Hi Marie,
Thankyou so much. That really is encouraging news, we are going to visit him in a little while, we have spoken to the vets today and he is eating food again all abeit bland stuff, he has his tubes removed apart from one and that's just the feeding one, as he isn't eating enough as yet.Im glad to hear your dog had made full recovery and fills me with abit more hope. It is a dreaded question i have not had the guts to ask the vets (they had told us a number of young pups had been to them this year at the royal vetenary college with parvo) how many of them survived. Bless our little Fudge hope he gets stronger every day.

That sounds like good news. Hope he continues to make a good recovery :-)

Seen Fudge today, he looks alot better, still has the feeding tube in. The greatest news i heard though if our baby boy keeps making as much progress each day as he has been, he may well be allowed home on Monday!!!! Everything crossed that this continues, hopefully see him again tomorrow, bless our little Fudge xx

Hi Diane.
Im so glad that Fudge is continuing to get better each day, that really is good news, and im glad me telling you about Jasper bless him, helped you feel a little positive, the vets i had him under at the time, were treating him for a pancreas difficiency, and it was throu getting a second opinion and taking him to the RSPCA at Putney that got him the right treatment and saved him. It sounds like Fudge is getting the best treatment possible, and at the right time, and its wonderful news that he may be coming home tomorrow so i will keep everything crossed, and send lots more hugs and healing love to him.

Just read the great news...hubby and i are pleased for you...well done little fudge.
- By marie pritchard [gb] Date 14.10.08 12:55 UTC
Oh Diane! im so so pleased, what wonderful news, im so glad little Fudge came throu bless him, such a big hurdle to overcome but bless him he is a little fighter. It must be so fantastic to get him home, and give him lots of cuddles and love. I hope you dont mind me giving you a little advice and i know its a long way off, but i found i couldn't have Jasper's booster done every year, i think maybe something in the jab made him ill, my vet said to go ahead and have it done, but after the first 2 years i stopped having it done as he had a reaction both times and i didn't want to risk having him ill. I dont know as it may have just been pure coincidence ,or it may have been due to the fact he had parvo as a pup, but he was fine the following year, so i put it down to the booster being done, I just wanted to let you know maybe Fudge will be fine having it done, maybe it was coincidence, but i just wanted to let you know, so you have plenty of time to look into it.
Give Fudge a big hug, and Lillie sends him a great big licky kiss too

Marie, Thanks, i was going to bend your ear and ask you ( if you didn't mind talking about it) if there was anything specific you did with Jasper after he came home eg food (he is on yucky pedigree chum puppy food) etc purely because you have been through it too, and i don't no many people that have had pups and they have survived, ( we still didn't believe it was true untill we picked him up yesterday afternoon, and getting used to the vets ringing every morning i was quite expecting a phone call today!)  i take on board what you say about his vaccination he only had his first done at the dogs home and was deemed to young with our vets (wanted him to be 10 weeks) so i don't no when he will have his second. He is nearly back to his usual self, he does sleep more as i said but he has certainly found his voice recently, we were pretty shocked to hear his yappy bark lol and of course where he has lost lots of weight ( he also likes to tell you to hurry with his food, mind you after not eating for such a long time i would be a bit cranky too lol) he generally feels abit cold so we have got him a jumper for the moment, till he fills out more. We are chuffed to bits, words can not explain how over joyed we are to have him home, fit and well, i really thank god he pulled through.

Gosh i will help Diane with any advice i can, thou i have to say its 20 years ago, i think pedigree chum was probably, if i remember rightly what Jasper was on, but of course now a days there are so many more products on the market and very good dried food, i know i could never give Jasper the tins of butchers tripe, that would give him an awful tummy, and as i said he did suffer bless him with bouts of bad tummy, as his tummy was made so sensitive, did Fudge bleed much? only Jasper lost so much blood when he had parvo.
Lillie has lots of allergies unfortunately so i have her on royal canin hypoallergenic, and i think if all these foods had been available when Jasper was young i wouldv'e tried dried opposed to tins. i think maybe on hindsight if i had kept him on dried food maybe he may not have had such a sensitive tum. i really dont know. when i got Lillie and she started with a bad tummy! i was so upset, as i thought she was going to be the same, but the r/c seems to suit her fine and she has a good weight, lovely coat and is quite happy on it now. anyway sorry waffling now, i think i would recommend you put him on dried food, and one that is for a sensitive tummy. Before Jasper was diagnosed with parvo, and they thought it was a pancreas difficeincy, the vets had put him on the id diet which was a dried food, but of course when he was correctly diagnosed he came off it, and i had him on pedigree chum, but i really think he wouldve faired better on dried. I used to have to keep an eye on Jasper and if he started to show signs being sick and of getting a bad tummy, i would whisk him off to the vets and they would recommend starveing him, give him meds ,and then it was chicken/ fish and rice for a week. As i say, if i had known then, what i know now with foods, i wouldve tried probably the r/c as Lillie is so well on it. maybe he wouldnt have had bad tummy bouts. I think if i remember i just tried to keep him quiet, and not get too excited straight after, he used to lay in his bed and wag his tail bless him, but didn't have the energy to get up! and i avoided taking him out too for a while as there was a bad outbreak of parvo in the area where i lived at the time, so i was too scared to take him out again, but i know Fudge is too young at the moment.
well i hope this has been some help, sorry i waffled a bit, if i think of anything else that i think will help, or you want any advice i will always be here to help, if i can.
he is a brave little boy, and im so glad you now have him home.

Fantastic :)
- By diane74 [gb] Date 14.10.08 20:57 UTC
Marie, thanks. As you will understand we also are worrying about him, when he can go out etc.

> did Fudge bleed much? They never really said, he didnt have blood in his stools or vomit whilst at home, i no while he was in hospital he did lose blood and could see intestinal wall in his feces.

His normal diet was dried food, which when we can will be slowly introduced again.

> sorry i waffled a bit

no you never, im glad for any info i think its different when you have been through it, and like i said talking to you about it helped especially knowing that there was hope!
