My friend has just rescued an ex-racing greyhound who is an absolute sweetheart :-D.  She's just rung me to ask for my advice but I'm at a bit of a loss, as I've never had this problem.  His teeth were covered in plaque when she got him (he was on a very soft diet), so he's had them all cleaned, but his breath still really smells!  She's tried all the usual minty chews that PAH have but nothing seems to be working.

The only suggestion I had was to try some live yoghurt in case it was a stomach problem, but told her I would ask you all for advice. So has anyone had any experience of this?  What did you do to sort it out?

Thanks

I would have him vet checked Paula in case there is a medical cause that is not obvious on visual exam by his owner.  Bad breath can be caused by a number of things and it's better not to try and disguise it but to determine the root cause.  He may still have an oral problem such as an abcess but it could be a gastric issue for eg.

Good on your friend for rescuing this lad - he's obviously got a very caring new owner and a cracking home :)
regards, Teri

i agree with teri, but a word of warning, a lot of the older greyhounds i have met seem to have bad breath. Not sure if its maybe a breed thing?

Are his anal glands empty? If he's been licking them his breath will be foul!

Thanks everyone, I thought it might be gastric which is why I suggested the live yoghurt while we waited for some answers.  I'll suggest she takes him to the vet for a check up, and if they can't come up with anything I'll buy her a peg for her nose :-D
