Hi
been thinking about this to, not looked into it at all so will be interested in the replies. One big thing for me is changing my email address if we swap over. Would i have to do that and the whole family as we all have our own addys. They all start with our name and finish with @btinernet.com Cant see another supplier wanting us to continue advertising bt??
Wendy

I'm just trying to look at this. I'm an intelligent(ish) woman, why is it all so confusing LOL?
I currently have BT Broadband, and have a desktop PC. I'm on the verge of ordering a laptop (been dithering about that for ages too, it's the hassle of getting everything off the old PC and on to the new one that keeps stopping me - particularly the Ipod).
So, will be wanting wireless Broadband. We have Sky, so their broadband is a cheaper option. Will there be a period where I don't have broadband services from either supplier if I swap, I wonder?
If I stick with BT, do I have to pay for a Home Hub if I want wireless ... or could I just buy any old wireless router?

We have the Sky surf, see & talk package & they are very good. Only recently switched for the talk options as they are slightly cheaper than BT for standard package, plus they don't charge for answermachine which BT do if you make less than 4 calls a month (we regularly do this!). With regards the phone OH made one phone call & that was it, they have done everything from there, didn't have to change number or anything else, plus they have a special offer on for 6 months at the moment, not sure on details though.
Think you would have to change e-mail address to a sky.com one though.
Can't imagine you would have a period with no broadband but would depend on how long Sky would take to take it all over & whether you wanted wireless of not! Give them a ring, they've been great with us. We do have Sky+ though which might get us extra perks, I don't know!!!

See thats what I mean I am intelligent but the whole thing baffles me. I am in the air about the "laptop" thing too and want to go wireless.
Oh back to the drawing thinking board.
I'll be changing my broadband to sky pretty imminently so will let you know how long it takes. I'm keeping my 'phone with BT as if you change to another provider then want to go back to BT it's £125 for the privilege!!!

Thanks Georgepig, will look at whether I want to change the phone or not.
Well, have bitten the bullet and ordered the laptop ... so now I have to get on with a broadband decision LOL.

At the risk of sounding like a complete girlie ... a pretty blue Dell one!! ROFL
There really is no hope for me, is there?

We have Sky TV, and have their free broadband option. Still have phonecalls with BT though because we have free eve and weekend for the same price as their option 1, which is the line rental price anyway.
No probs with Sky broadband. Even though kids and oh use it a lot, their minimum free option so far has been ok for us. Can't understand why some people still pay about £20 a month for broadband. Happy surfing!

I pay £21 p.m. for (up to) 8Mb Broadand, mine varies between 3Mb & 7Mb depending on the time of day, inclusive of my monthly phone line rental and free unlimited anytime of day U.K. & International (36 countries) calls. :)
I used to pay that for a 2Mb broadband connection alone !
TALK TALK I'm happy ! :)

You are all so brave,i wish i was, im also still on dial up bt.

I am on dial up from BT too and I like it but need my phone line back............
I'm still not brave when it comes to online transactions-I plug it in rather than use wireless just to try and reduce the risk of people intercepting and snooping on me.

I noticed this question while scanning the page. BT works well with every router I've used so far, you don't have to use their Home hub. Mine came free and it's in the attic as a backup if my router ever breaks down. BT doesn't have any odd requirements for wireless connections (I hear wanadoo is a nightmare!). As long as you have an ADSL router (the modem to talk to broadband) that also acts as a wireless network hub you'll be fine. Read the package carefully, there are wireless hubs that don't have the router. Having them seperate is just more complicated and extra hardware.
Hi Kazz
Well we've been on aol broadband for last few years with no problems until we moved few weeks ago and not it wont work, we arent sure whether we have dropped the wireless router box whilst we were packing.
Anyway we were getting nowhere with aol technical helpline, they put you through to some indian in bombay or somewhere and I had to spell every word out to him, he didnt understand me and i didnt understand them!
Phoned around and reckon sky has the best deals. We are with sky now for tv plus etc... so now we have sky talk, which is the phone service for £10 per month with free weekend and evening calls! so that will save a packet on bt, the broadband is free unless you want high download speed of 8mgs, so we have that for £5 per month, sounds good.
We are now on sky talk, and th broadband box (which you get free, wireless router) should be with us next week, so long as it works im happy!
And to the person who asked would they be without broadband whilst they are changing over, the answer is no, when the new provider connects you this is when they turn the old service off.
