what age can you start pups off with a chicken wing?
- By tripie [gb] Date 06.10.08 21:07 UTC
I started my Border Terriers on them at 6weeks old, and also the Danes got them at 8 weeks old.

thanks for replying.  stud dog owner said to cook them  first  because of  any issues with e coli???????

I hope the stud owner meant cook the meat, NEVER feed cooked bones. I would think to cook a chicken wing is a waste of time due to size and amount of meat. The reason to give wings in the first place is to eat the whole thing. I have heard of people dropping the wing in boiling water for a few seconds to kill bacteria, but don't know how effective that is.

You shouldn't cook them as they become brittle. Dogs eat all sorts of rubbish if they can, and they can cope with bacteria in their gut.

Poultry necks are good for pups, raw of course.

NEVER feed cooked bones of any kind they can splinter and cause all kinds of problems.
Raw bones are fine, chicken wings can be given to a puppy as soon as you bring them home.  If you are not happy feeding them whole either mince them, or hold onto one end while the puppy munches the other.  They soon get the hang of it!

Just to help them on their way at first, bash them with a meat tenderiser or mallet.  My eldest has never eaten anything other than raw and was started on wings at 4 weeks!

thanks  for replies.  i NEVER feed bones. cooked or uncooked.

My puppy was weaned onto whole raw wings at 4 weeks and by 6 weeks could chomp his way through a thigh at nearly the same rate as his mum :)  Best to freeze and then defrost first before giving them - the freezing kills off harmful bacteria.

As has been pointed out *nothing with bones* should ever be cooked or, for that matter, * defrosted in a microwave *

regards, Teri :)

This may be a daft question, but if you never feed bones, what had you planned to do with the chicken wings?
- By sal Date 07.10.08 17:32 UTC
Not daft at all Pedlee, was thinking  of changing  feeding habits. . however have     cooked  wings bones discarded.

6 weeks ish

cooked  wings bones discarded. Have you seen how little meat you get from  chicken wings?  I would never suggest buying wings to cook.  Legs or thigh if you insist it has to be cooked.
