Just looking into information I was given after my recent thread asking for advice on here and wondered how many of "us" regularly give our dogs probiotics?  Why do you feed it and do you feed it "as and when" or do you feed it continuously?

Thank you :)

Hi Blossom

I only feed this if one of my dogs has lost their appetite or is recovering from an illness etc... just to get them going again.

Hi blossom, I give continuously, it's good for dogs with alergies and dogs that have health problems (as in my dogs case). My dog also gets a stronger dose when he is ill.

Thank you for the replies.  I was just thinking of giving it as and when it is required as I worry that a dog will get used to it and then it won't be beneficial?

Many studies have proven that giving daily does boosts immune system this is why a lot of food manufacturers have introduced it into animals diets.

Hi, I've just recently started giving probiotics to my dogs in powdered form, though previously they used to get live goats yoghurt as a treat once a week. The reason I started using it was 'cause my 18 month had recurring diarrhoa up to 12 months - latterly it was as a result of campylobacter. Since turning a year she's had a few bouts of diarrhoa, and whilst the vet wasn't concerned I was. Thinking about it I decided that her digestive system probably needed a bit of help to build up the 'friendly' bacteria - it's had a heck of a battering - hence the probiotics.  I use Aviform (as recommended by another poster on this site) and give it to all my dogs 2 days a week (we do weekends 'cause that's easy to remember!) on a maintenance programme.  If any of them do have diarrhoa then I follow the recommendations of feeding it for a longer period, and would do same if any had antibiotics.  You can use live yoghurt to the same effect, I just don't often have live yoghurt in the fridge - can't stand it myself - and find the tub of powder more convenient.  I'm not sure it's necessary to feed continuously.  Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend a good probiotic for me?  Has anyone tried Bionic Biotic from PoochandMutt?  Here is the link.... http://poochandmutt.com/bionic-biotic/

Are there any others which you consider better?

Thanks

I'm using Aviform's TDP Probiotics, haven't researched a lot into the different form. Using this as a it was recommended and b the price is very good (3 for 2 offer at the moment).  Some tubs are really small and feeding all my dogs it on a maintenance basis, some tubs would last me a couple of weeks!!  some also recommend much higher levels per kg bodyweight than others.  I suspect live yoghurt is as good, but the powdered form is more convenient.  Not sure if I'm allowed to put a direct link or not (had one removed a while ago) but if you google Aviform, go to the dog section then digestive.

I either use live natural yoghurt, or protexin.
