Topic Dog Boards / Health / Update on Archer

Hi everyone
Archers 3 weeks were up yersterday so it was back to the vets.We went fully prepared to have him PTS since he was worse than before and very depressed. He seems to have lost all his love of life and had just given up.
The vet said he rarely saw such a depressed dog after surgery and said the knee was no better. He did however persuade us to give him one more chance and despite promising myself I would not put him through surgery again he went back today to have his knee cap removed.
Can't wait to collect him tomorrow-Just praying I've done the right thing -I'd do anything to have my old Archer back!!!He looks terrible-dull coat and hollowed in behind the ribs not to mention having a leg that wouldn't look out of place on Frankensteins monster!!!!
Thanks for all your advice ,Nikki.

Hi Nikki
I was wondering how things were with Archer. I'm really sorry that he has been so unhappy, it is heartbreaking to see them like that, isn't it ?

If it helps at all, the orthodaedic vet I saw in June said that a lot of dogs who have this op manage very well without their kneecaps.

I really hope things turn out well for you both - do let us know how he gets on.
Thinking of you

Hi Nikki

How's Archer ? Did the op go well ?
- By archer [gb] Date 03.11.02 14:43 UTC
Hi Joyce
Archer is aswell as can be expected .Hes very swollen and sore -I can't remember him being as bruised the last 2 ops as he is this time.Considering the op was on his knee even his 'bits'(trying to put it delicately)are black and blue poor sole!!
Time will tell as to the outcome-the vet said the op went well but his own muscles, with him being such a powerful dog,are working against the repairs.
Thanks to everyone for your concern and kind thoughts
Nikki.

Thanks for the update, Nikki. Hopefully the swelling will go down gradually over the next few days. It's ironic about his muscles isn't it ? Usually dogs with patella luxation need good muscles to keep the ligament in the groove, but, it seems this may now delay his recovery.

But, don't despair, give it more time. This latest op could just do the trick for him.

Good luck to you both, would like to hear how he goes on.
